Rhetorical Analysis of a Peer-Reviewed Article

In the scholarly article "Who is going to save the Brazilian Amazon forest? Reflections
On deforestation, wildlife eviction, and stewardship behavior" authored by Marianny J. B. Silva,
Marconi F. da Costa, Salomão A. de Farias, and Lilian S. O. Wanderley, a comprehensive
analysis of the Amazon's plight unfolds. Targeting researchers seeking insight into the forest's
state, the article strategically employs Ethos, Pathos, and Logos to persuade. Using a blend of
these rhetorical strategies, the authors present a compelling narrative. They adeptly use Logos,
substantiating their arguments with data, while Pathos evokes an emotional connection with the
reader, emphasizing the urgency of preserving this ecological treasure. Moreover, their
established credibility amplifies the article's impact, fostering trust and reliability among readers.
By rightfully using these rhetorical elements, the article implores its audience to grasp the
gravity of the situation and actively engage in preserving this irreplaceable ecosystem.
Within this article, the authors deftly wield ethos to create a very strong and compelling
narrative steeped in credibility and authority in paragraph two found after the introduction. In
this paragraph they mentions where they got their information from, “In Brazil, the National
Institute for Space Research (INPE), linked to the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation
and Communications, monitors deforestation in the Amazon forest by satellite, offering data so
that combat actions can be organized and executed by public, private, and third sector agencies.”
INPE's affiliation with the government and its dedicated focus on environmental surveillance
infuses the article with an aura of authenticity and expertise.
In paragraph two of this article while talking about the effects that deforestation is having
on not only the forest but us because it comes back around we see how the authors use Logos.
"Deforestation in Brazilian Amazon has several negative consequences, both in environmental
aspects such as local soil erosion and river runoff, loss of endemic species, loss of environmental
services and carbon emissions, as in social issues linked to land conflicts, poverty, and poor
health outcomes (Perz et al., 2005). Among them, the loss of biodiversity stands out. Amazon
deforestation damages native vegetation and destroys the natural habitat of several species. It
hinders their survival, leading them to migrate to other inadequate spaces or exterminating them
in the newly modified forest (Nascimento et al., 2019)." by making the conscious of how
deforestation is going to greatly affect us humans in the long run. By creating this feeling in the
readers it makes them want to work to stop the deforestation and find a solution to it.
Pathos is being used in paragraph two when the authors talk about how deforestation and
what is happening to the forest is hurting the animals.
"In human actions to destroy the natural habitat in the Amazon, Brazil must still combat
the illegal trade in fauna and flora and poaching; crimes against wildlife that contribute
to one of the largest black markets today (Lima, 2007; Moreto, 2018). The most
common animals treated in this trade include birds, reptiles, insects, fish, and large
animals, which are rare, which are in danger of Extinction (Wilson‐Wilde, 2010). Among
the endangered species that live in the Amazon biome, we can mention Gavião‐Real,
Ararajuba, and Peixe‐boi (Figure 2)” by talking about the black market and illegal trade
they create a sense of emotion with the reader. By creating this feeling the readers are
more encouraged and moved, they think of these poor animals losing their homes. The
authors make it known the animals are vulnerable and we are hurting them.
In conclusion, the persuasiveness of this article, "Who is going to save the Brazilian
Amazon forest? Reflections On deforestation, wildlife eviction, and stewardship behavior" is
especially rooted in the masterful usage of Ethos, Logos, and Pathos. This scholarly article
transcends mere information delivery, fostering a profound connection with its audience while
compelling action for the preservation of the Amazon forest. The use of Logos within this article
shows the extensive ramifications of deforestation, not just on the environment but also on
societal aspects. By meticulously outlining the environmental repercussions, such as soil erosion,
species loss, and carbon emissions, the authors paint a stark picture of the multifaceted impacts,
rationally appealing to the readers' logical sensibilities and emphasizing the urgency of halting
this ecological crisis. Pathos, the emotional appeal embedded in the narrative, emerges vividly as
the authors evoke a response by depicting the plight of wildlife. By shedding light on the illegal
trade and black market activities that plunder and endanger the lives of vulnerable species, the
article tugs at the heartstrings of the audience, igniting empathy and a resounding call for action
to safeguard these voiceless inhabitants of the forest. Lastly, ethos, fortified by the authors'
meticulous referencing of credible sources and their collaboration with the National Institute for
Space Research (INPE), cements the article's credibility. This strategic alliance with authoritative
entities enhances the trustworthiness of the discourse, compelling readers to listen to the urgent
call for preservation. Ultimately, this article serves not just as an informational resource but as a
catalyst for change. It harnesses the collective power of logic, emotion, and credibility, imploring
its audience not only to comprehend the dire situation but also to take proactive steps in
championing the conservation of the invaluable Amazon forest. As the final words fade, the
resonating plea to safeguard this irreplaceable ecosystem reverberates, urging each reader to
become an advocate for the Amazon's salvation.
