1. Background/Introduction

The availability of in-situ measurements and multiple detection analyses has expanded the water
monitoring applications in various advanced techniques including successful establishment in hand-
held. Sensing devices, which improves portability in real-time basis for the detection of
contaminant, such as microorganisms, pesticides, and heavy metal ions, inorganic and organic
components. Among these technologies: fiber optic sensors, which are faster, more accurate and
have few limitations that allow them to operate in uncontrolled or difficult to access environments.
The main objective of this work is to develop a system of environmental sensors, mainly to measure
and detect sensitivity, aimed to test the cobalt chloride II hexahydrate.

2. Principle operation

The power in the fiber core is sensitive to the environmental changes in the surrounding. Otherwise,
if the refractive index of the surrounding medium is very close to that of the core and the fiber
cladding is only of few wavelength (< 5 units) then the power in the core decrease exponentially and
will penetrate into the surrounding. The evanescent wave exponentially decays as a function of radius
of the fiber [1].
In order to get more information from the excited molecule on the surface of the fiber, the penetration
depth should be enhanced. The method of optimizing the geometry of the fiber is a good candidate by
shaping the optical fiber can increase the strength of the evanescent waves in the cladding region. It is
critical as this increases the emission or scattering process inside the biological cells [2].

3. Conclusion:

The selected pollutant is (CoCl2 ) which if could exceed the value (0.2 g/kg), it will be very
dangerous on a newborn and the environment as well, we have saved the curves of absorbed light
passing through the solution of (distilled water- CoCl2) in a toxicity range (100-500) mg/l, for the
form of fiber optic (U-Shaped fiber ) for length L=20 cm . After that, we measured the sensitivity of
this fiber and we concluded that: The sensitivity of U shape fiber is higher than the sensitivity of
uniform because the light from the environment is interacting directly with the fiber.
