Abstract

This research emphasizes on the impact stress has on our memory, shedding light on the
multiple effects stress exerts on our memory processes. Recently, there have been studies
involving the interesting relationship between stress and memory. The areas of brain
controlling the memory centre’s also have an effect on the stress responses. However, after
classifying and exploring the factors which are the basic sources of stress, we can pinpoint how
these factors influence the stress-memory relationship.

Introduction
In human beings, stress activates the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis. Release of cortisol
influences memory. It is concluded that stress or cortisol blocks memory retrieval and one
cannot learn. An fMRI study showed that the high cortisol levels were linked with a strong
amygdala response. Stress can not only strain but also enhance memory. Studies analysing the
hippocampus-dependent memory reveals that there are certain mechanisms by which acute
stress can enhance long-term memory.

Stress has become a major part in our lives whether its due to meeting deadlines or financial
pressures. It not only affects us physically but has a profound effect on our cognitive processes
like memory. Understanding the relationship and effects of stress and memory is extremely
important not just academically but it also holds great value for clinical psychology, education
and our daily life. Stressful events in our lives can release stress hormones which intensifies the
encoding of memories.
The effects of stress on memory can be impacted by the duration and intensity of the stressor
and how the brain responds to these stressors. Stress can derange the memory process where
the long term and short-term memories information is transferred. When the stress hormone
level is high it can affect the formation of long-term memory, making It difficult to form a long-
lasting memory. It’s crucial to know that these effects vary among individuals, factors like
genetics, past experiences can have a different impact on disparity. Acute stress such as stress
experienced during your final exam can have effects or some time but chronic stress like a long-
term problem like financial issues etc can have long term effects
Understanding the complex relationship between stress and memory is crucial to protect our
memory and overall cognitive health. New studies provide more important evidences of stress
effects on memory focusing more on its relation with psychiatric disorders such as PTSD (post-
traumatic stress disorder).
