Question
1. The performance of girls in mathematics in secondary schools is usually lower than
that of boys.
a) Why do girls perform poorly in mathematics compared to boys?
b) What can be done to remedy the situation?
2. Assuming you are the head of Mathematics department (HOD) in a secondary school.
As the HOD, you are required to make and end of term *report* about Mathematics
related issues in the school.
a) What would be the components of your report?
b) Write the said report in *(a)* above.

Solution to number 1 a)
Mathematics is one of the science subjects done at secondary level. Since most people have a mindset that science subjects are difficult, there has
been poor performance in these subjects especially among the girls and a few have been performing them highly compared to boys.

The following are some of the reasons why girls perform poorly in mathematics compared to boys
 Girls have negative attitude towards mathematics compared to boys. Most girls have a negative mindset towards mathematics being a hard
subject and they end up performing it poorly which is not a case with most boys .

 lack of proper career advice , most of the girls lack advice which encourages them to work hard towards achieving their goals, hence they
end up performing poorly in mathematics compared to boys.
 Girls who participate well in mathematics are discriminated and men fear to marry them thinking they are tough. Such attitudes have lead to
poor performance of girls in mathematics .

 The lower academic performance of female students to male may be due to the fact that some schools distance from the homes is a big
challenge especially for female students considered to be weaker than boys to walk to and from school. Furthermore, parents may fear for the
safety of girls and this leads to absenteeism from class and then results in low academic achievements of female students.

 Most communities especially in rural areas are uneducated and have no sufficient knowledge about the significance of education either for
themselves and country. Due to this reason the family and communities have a negative attitude towards education and this makes female
students feel hopelessness, unable to see a bright future and poorly perform in mathematics. This may hinder females from being motivated to
learn as well as to perform well in mathematics.

 Lack of knowledge of usefulness of maths. Some girls do not know any information about the usefulness of studying maths and so they
see it as a waste of time studying it hence they tend to lose concentration in maths.

 Jobs and remuneration: Poor career prospects in science fields do not encourage girls to stay in school. Majority of people who study math
subject end up being a teacher with very low Remuneration.

 Natural factors: Girls are affected by natural factors like monthly periods that cause different effects basing on an individual and this alone
can distract some one for four to seven days and this can cause a lot of declination in someone’s performance which is not the case with
boys.

 House hold chores. There is greater need for girls rather than boys labor at home. Many parents keep their daughters at home whenever
there are some chores like cooking and taking care of siblings that limits their concentration in subjects like math’s.
 Role models. There is a complete absence of female positive role models in academic fields especially in maths careers in many
communities in the rural areas.

Solutions to poor performance of girls.(b)

 Teachers and parents should make deliberate attempts to change girls' attitudes towards mathematics. As it stands now, their attitudes
towards mathematics are negative and this impedes their achievement in the subject.
 Teachers should attempt to vary their instructional techniques as much as is possible. This is necessary to make learning mathematics
interesting to the girls.

 Head teachers should step up provision of mathematics facilities in their schools. Adequate facilities would enable teachers to use desirable
teaching techniques which impacts on girls' performance in the subject.

 secondary schools need to strengthen their guidance and counselling department and put more emphasis on career advice. This will help to
demystify mathematics and enable girls recognise subjects that are recipes for their dream careers.

 The schools management and other school communities should also motivate female students to attend normal and tutorial classes regularly,
work to increase their self-confidence and give advice and awareness regarding peer pressure and its effects on their academic performance.

 Time management: Girls should learn how to manage time by being in the right place at the Time and they should be helped by teachers to
ensure that they are in class during that time and this can cause some improvement

 Motivation from female teachers. Instead of the female teachers criticizing these girls all the time for their mistakes, they should instead
motivate them by talking to them on how to do these things until when they have succeeded . This encourages them to aim higher instead of
losing hope.
 Good performance in mathematics depends on effective teaching methodology. Teaching methodologies can be improved through seminars,
workshops and conferences. These workshops and seminars should therefore be encouraged through the local head teachers' association
hence enabling girls to perform well in mathematics.

 The schools should also give much attention towards increasing female student’s participation in education, because many families do not
allow female students to study with male students.

 School environment should be comfortable for girls’ physical and psychological well-being. The district education office should organize a
motivation program for high achiever female students and their parents, teachers who participate on female issue as well as female students
teachers committee to increase their motivation.

a) Total no. of books appertaining to the subject in the school Library: 4,200
b) Amount of Library Budget available to the Department: 40,000
c) No. of new books added to the library for the Department in the term. 100

7. a) Indicate advantages experienced by the Department in the day to day work;

(i) Good environment and infrastructure conducive to holistic learning and teaching.
(ii)Cooperation by non-teaching staff in making laptops and projector available whenever required, is appreciated.
Having department rooms makes organizing functions in the department easier.
(iii)
(iv)Staff canteen is a welcome addition.
b) Disadvantages experienced by the Department;

i) For teaching mathematics, we need to write a lot on the board. Non availability of markers and good quality erasers is a real
problem; it needs to be addressed on an urgent basis as it is a serious problem.
ii) Laptops and some projects are not up-to-date.
iii) Staff canteen is not properly furnished. It is in a very shabby state.
iv) Rooms not cleaned properly, especially the staff room. Rooms, including the staff room, are not dusted properly, mostly the staff
room is full of dust and dirt.
v) Students are willing to research and read yet the number of books are not enough. c)

Suggestions, if any

(i) Good erasers and markers may be issued to faculty as often erasers get missing from classrooms. We have been purchasing and
carrying our own markers to teach, which not a desirable situation is.
(ii)Up gradation of projectors and laptops will make use of technology in teaching smoother.
(iii) A white board may be made available for the Mathematics department room.
(iv) One or two comfortable/easy chairs may be made available for the department room. It will aid in making guests of the
department more comfortable.
(v) Staff canteen needs proper furnishing so we can eat in a hygienic condition.
(v)Staff room needs to be dusted thoroughly, in addition to regular cleaning, every day. We spend most of our waiting/free time
either in the staff room or in the staff canteen.
vi) more books should be added to aid reading and research of students.

.
Achievements made during the term.
• We managed to Excel with 20 distinctions and 15 credits, no pass and failure out of 35 students who sat for senior four end of
term exams.
• Out of the 10 students that were doing Mathematics at advanced level, four students managed to get A , three students
managed to get B and three students also managed to get C which was a great achievement too
• For the senior ones we recorded students who got division one with percentage of 89% which is a great stand point as far as
mathematic is concern.
• We have Mathematics clubs with in the school such as mathematic clubs and this has improved on students’ performance in all
classes book
Challenges met during the term.
i. The Department Room is under-utilized.
ii. We have faced a challenge of finances when it comes to projects and clubs especially for the new curriculum classes,
that’s to say the senior one, two and three classes and this has always drawn us back
iii. Mathematics books in the library are also few of which students can not afford these books which has led to decline in
performance.
iv. In the maths department, the teachers are few compared to number of students, which has made work difficult and
tiresome

Opportunities
1. Potential inter-disciplinary research collaboration both for department and students.
2. Organizing National /International level Conferences annually.
3. Extension activities to be undertaken in the neighborhood community sensitizing students to social issues for their holistic development.

CONCLUSION
I thank the almighty God who has enabled us to teach the students from the beginning of the term up to now that we have
come to itss end without getting any problem
