COMPREHENSION
Boafo, Ntim and Ahenkan were friends. None of them completed even the primary
school. Boafo stopped going to school when he was in class 4. Ntim too, when he
was in class three. As for Ahenkan he stopped going to school in class two. They
are all young men now. They do odd jobs for a living. They carry loads for traders
on market days. They are hired to weed on people’s farms. Sometimes they work
as labourers to help masons build houses.
On Wednesday, Maame Serwaa hired them to weed on her farm. When they were
weeding , Boafo saw a ripe pawpaw. It was partly eaten by a rat. They could see
the teeth marks on the pawpaw. Later Ahenkan saw a rat hole. He called his friends
. They soon found two other holes. Ntim cut a long stick. He pushed it into one of
the holes. The rat did not come out. They later fetched palm leaves and put them in
one of the holes. They made a fan and set fire to the leaves. They began to fan it.
Soon smoke came out of all the holes. All of a sudden, a big cobra came out of one
of the holes. It bit Boafo on his ankle and quickly moved into the bush.
Boafo screamed “ I have been bitten by the snake”. The two other friends shouted
for help. Opanin Nimo was working on his farm. He heard the shouts of the young
men. He quickly run to them. He first tied a piece of cloth above where the snake
had bitten Boafo. He went to the bush and collected some herbs. He mashed them
together. He gave it to Boafo to chew and swallow. Opanin Nimo, Ahenkan and
Ntim carried Boafo to the road side.
They took him to Yaaba Hospital. His leg was swollen. The Doctor quickly gave
him two injections. One of nurses removed the cloth, cleaned the ankle of Boafo.
He applied some liniment and bandaged it. Boafo hopped to the male ward. He
was admitted for three days. When he was discharged, Boafo and his friends went
and thanked the doctor and nurses for saving Boafo’s life. They also thanked
Opanin Nimo for the first aid he gave Boafo.
