The theory of biogenesis contested the SG when Rudolf Virchow hypothesized that the
living cells arise only from pre- existing cells. However, he cannot provide valid and
scientific support hence, SG remained as the contending theory about the existence of the
microorganisms until 1861.
Louis Pasteur, a French scientist made significant contribution that refuted SG. He
demonstrated that microbes are present in the air and can contaminate sterile solutions,
but the air itself cannot create microbes. His hypothesis was based of his own experiment
when he boiled beef broth in the flasks; one flask was sealed and the other flask was left
open and cooled. He reasoned that microbes are present in the air are the agents
responsible for contaminating nonliving matter and the microbial life can be destroyed by
heat and prevent airborne microorganisms access the nutrient environment. His work
provided evidence that microorganisms in nonliving solutions can be attributed to the
microorganisms that are already present in the air or in the medium used.
