Assignment No. 1

1. A 2000 kg (19,600 N) elevator with broken cables in a test rig is falling at 4.00 m/s when it
contacts a cushioning spring at the bottom of the shaft. The spring is intended to stop the
elevator, compressing 2.00 m. During the motion, a safety clamp applies a constant 17,000
N friction force to the elevator. What is the necessary force constant k for the spring?

Given:

(since it stops)

(since the elevator is moving downward)

Required:

Solution:

The necessary force constant for the spring is 10,620 N/m.

2. An inventor designs a pendulum clock using a bob with mass m at the end of a thin wire of
length L. Instead of swinging back and forth, the bob is to move I n a horizontal circle at
constant speed v, with the wire making a fixed angle b with the vertical direction. This is
called a conical pendulum because the suspending wire traces out a cone. Find the tension
F in the wire and the period T (the time for one revolution of the bob).

From the figure a, we can form an equation:

From figure b, apply Newton’s second law of motion

(horizontal and vertical).
a. Summation of horizontal forces:
.

b. Summation of vertical forces:

Equate Equation 1 and 2 and solve for .

To find the tension F in the wire, use the derived force from the summation of
vertical forces
Use the formula for to solve for T
