1. Explain the difference between "instead" and "instead of".

The difference between "instead" and "instead of are : Instead is an adverb, we use it
when saying what someone does rather than doing something else then Instead of is a
preposition, we use it to introduce something that is not done, not used, or not true, in
contrast to something that is done, is used, or is true.

2. Also explain the meaning of "besides", "but" and "except",

- Besides is used in the beginning or before the noun that is in the end of the sentence
on the other hand the we cannot use “except” in the beginning of the sentence .
("Beside" is a preposition meaning "next to," and it's used to mark
something's position in relation to something else.).
- But : used to introduce an added statement, usually something that is different from
what you have said before.
- Except' = everything else apart from one, or more identified 'exceptions'. Except” is
used before the noun or pronoun that is in the end of the sentence.

3. Give examples in sentences:

- Instead :

There’s no coffee, would you like a cup of tea instead?


If you don’t have olive oil, you can use sunflower oil instead.
Hema did not answer. Instead she looked out of the taxi window.
I felt like crying, but I managed to smile instead.

I will have tea instead of coffee, please.
I will buy trousers instead of skirt.
Could we have potatoes instead of rice, please?

- Besides:

He visited the Red fort besides the Taj Mahal.

Besides seafood, I love all kind of food

Besides math, all my exam’s score was perfect


- But:
She's very hard-working but not very imaginative.
She can eat a lot but she can’t cook
I will call you but not this morning
The play's good, but not that good - I've seen better.

Except for Paul, they were all young men.
