INSTRUCTION.
 This paper consists of sections A and B.
 Answer all questions in section A and three questions in section B. Questions five
and six are compulsory.
 Each question in section A carries ten (10) marks and in section B each question
carries 20 marks.
 Remember to write your examination number/name.

SECTION A (40 MARKS)


Short answer questions
Answer all questions from this section.
1. (a). Describe the meaning of the following concepts as used in linguistics.
i. Register iv. Sociolect
ii. Foreign language v. Language performance
iii. Arbitrariness
(b). With appropriate examples highlight the five phrases of language policy in Tanzania.

2. (a). As a language user briefly show five ways on how inflectives make you
communicate effectively.
(b). With examples indicate the linguistic terminologies presented by the following
expressions.
i. The act of taking a word or phrase from one language and use it in another
language without any modification.
ii. A process of word formation in which a new word is formed by changing a
word from one word category to another without morphological
marking/affixation.

iii. Forming new words by using the initial letters of a set of other words.
iv. The morphemes that differ in pronunciation but are semantically identical
v. Every form to which an affix can be added.
3. (a). How would you respond to the following expressions?
i. Could I help you carry your suitcase?
ii. Hidaya has lost his mother
iii. Ally, it is getting late. I have to go now.
iv. I am sorry for taking your book without permission my friend.
v. Could you have another glass of juice, please?
(b). Using five applicable examples, indicate five different plosives which occur
either at the beginning or at the end of words of your choice.
4. Differentiate the following linguistic concepts.
i. Fact Vs Opinion
ii. Note making Vs Note taking
iii. Minutes of the meeting Vs agenda of the meeting
iv. In text citation Vs End of essay citation
v. Expository composition Vs narrative composition

SECTION A (60 MARKS)


Essay questions
Answer three questions from this section. Question five (5) and six (6) are
compulsory.
5. By using appropriate examples, explain how translation and interpretation differ.
(Give eight (8) points).

6. As a member of the speech community, how do you benefit from using a language
which you know very well? (Give eight points and support your explanations with
vivid examples).
7. Write an argumentative composition on “corruption free generation is possible in
Tanzania”give six strong points to argue for or against.
8. By using applicable examples explain the strategies that you should employ in order
to become an effective listener. (Give eight (8) points).
