Q.1 Put stress marks on the appropriate syllable in each sentence to indicate word (5)
stress.
a) Everybody in Brazil either plays or watches football on weekends.
b) To be or not to be that is the question!
c) All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand!
d) Ah, Faustus. Now hast thou but one bare hour to live!
e) O my love is like a red, red rose!

Q.2 Answer any one of these questions based on the ‘CommunicationModule’: (5)
a) Describe all the mediums of communication in use today. Discuss the merits and
limitations of the written medium.
b) Discuss in detail the Principles of Communication and their role in enhancing the
efficacy of communication.

Q.3 Answer any two of these questions based on the poem ‘Rime of the Ancient (10)
Mariner’:
a) Would you agree with the view that the poem is Gothic in nature? Discuss with
examples from the poem.
b) What is the solution offered by the Hermit for the redemption of the Mariner’s
soul? Do you think it is an effective solution? Discuss.
c) Is the poem an example of Retributive Justice, Redemptive Justice or Reformative
Justice? Discuss.

Q.4 The following passage is in ordinary orthography. Transcribe it and rewrite it as (10)
per the pronunciation using IPA symbols.

I have needed some new bookshelves for a long time. So, during my holiday I decided to
tackle the job myself. Not that I am very clever with my hands but it did not seem too

difficult and as I had already said that we could not afford to go away I thought it would
be prudent not to spend money having it done professionally. I bought the wood at the
local handicraft shop and I had plenty of screws, but I found that my old saw, which had
been left behind by the previous owner of the house, and I decided to buy a new one.
That was my first mistake, my second was to go to the biggest ironmonger in London
and ask for a saw.

Q.5 Prepare a Report based on the following problem. Use Tables, Graphs or Charts (10)
wherever necessary. Write only the main body of the Report. Also prepare a Table
of Contents.

The Family Welfare Department of Gujarat State wishes to carry out a survey of
senior citizens of three age groups living in the Bhaijipura area of Gandhinagar city. The
three age groups are: Just retired, Between 70 to 80 and very senior citizens (above 80).
The department wants to know how many senior citizens live with other family
members, how many live in old age homes, how many have family members living
abroad and how many live by themselves. They also want to know how many have
spouses living and how many are single. The department also wants to know how many
senior citizens are financially dependent and how many are self – reliant. You are a
welfare officer in the department. Your name is Deepti Sharma / Deepak Sharma.
Prepare this report to be submitted to the Head of the Department.

Q.6 Write the minutes of the following meeting: (10)

A meeting of the regional managers of Sokia Mobiles, a Korean firm was held on
Monday the 18th of December, 2021 at its factory premises, in Hyderabad, India at 11.00
AM. The firm has recently entered the Indian market. The meeting was chaired by the
CEO Mr. Suden Li and the rapporteur was Ms. Suu Fi, the Secretary. The purpose of the
meeting was to discuss the following items:
i) A massive advertising campaign to make its products well known in India.
ii) Opening of sales and service centres in small towns.
iii) Bonus to employees for good performance.
iv) Transportation facilities for all.
v) Incentives to retailers.
vi) Any other item.

A few managers had sent their regrets. One of them was absent without informing. Write
the minutes of this meeting on behalf of Ms. Suu Fi. The meeting is hypothetical.
Students have the freedom to interpret each agenda item as per their wish.
