FORM FIVE MID-TERM EXARMINATION

ENGLISH LANGUAGE 1

Time: 3Hrs March, 2024


Instructions
a) This paper consists of seven (8) questions.
b) Answer only 7 questions from, four from Section A and Three from Section B.
c) Each question carries the equal weight of 20 marks.
d) Cellular phones are not allowed in examination room.
e) Clearly and smart work to be considered.
SECTION A (40)
Answer all questions in this section
1. Name the technical or linguistic term for the following expressions;
i. When Indian speaks English language, it is quite different from the way Nigerians
speak English language.
ii. Refers to the study of words, phrases, clauses and sentences.
iii. A function of language which is also known as ideational function.
iv. A physical form representing some morpheme in the language,
v. In Tanzania, English language and Kiswahili language are used as an official
language with distinctive roles in the society.
vi. The process of forming words by morphologically changing their internal
Structure to indicate some grammatical information.
vii. The language into which the meaning is turned during translation process.
viii. The Common Citation in Social Science academic work is an APA format. What
is the APA stands for?

2. (a) Draw a tree diagram of major types of morpheme with their subtypes and one
appropriate example in each branch from top to the bottom.
(b) Differentiate the following word formation processes by giving concrete examples.
i. Clipping and blending
ii. Compounding and acronym
iii. Conversion and coinage
3. Translate the following sentences using word to word translation methods.
i. Mtoto mzuri anakula nyama
ii. Mbwa mdogo amekufa
iii. Honeymoon
iv. Sweetheart
v. Moonlight
vi. Samba alimng’ata mguu
vii. Vitoto vyake vimepotea
viii. Mjomba aliyekuja jana amepotea
ix. Mji wote umejaa maji.
x. Deadline

SECTION B (60) Marks

Answer only three questions in this section.

5. Assume you have been appointed to be a secretary of the class meeting, your new
elected chairperson is not aware about the procedures in Conducting a meeting especially
on how to draw the meeting agenda and to keep meeting minutes. Assist him to write a
memorandum to inform your fellow to attend the meeting. Your memorandum must have
agenda.
6. Mr. John is a form six leaver at Mtoni Secondary school two years past now, one day he
was given a text to translate by his young brother who is a form six. But Mr John found
some things which are difficult to translate. Discuss four (3) things which are difficult to
translate and (3) points to show why they are too difficult
7. Mr. Mudhir is prominent and; legend history teacher, and specifically in history one in
advanced level. During his teaching session he uses Multilanguage’s. Why Mr. Mudhir
do so? Use six points
8. “Affixation is the process”. Discuss use six points.
