Alba Iulia is a big city in Romania. It is located at an
altitude of 270 m, at a distance of 340 km from Bucharest. The municipality is located in the perimeter formed by the Ampoi river, the Sebeș river, the ridges of the Apuseni mountains and the Transylvanian Plateau. On November 1, 1599, Mihai Viteazul entered Alba Iulia, achieving the political union of Transylvania, Moldavia and Wallachia under his leadership. The keys to the city were handed to him by Bishop Demetrius Napragyi, who became chancellor of Transylvania during the reign of Mihai Viteazul.
Today, Alba Iulia is a European city, the residence of Alba
County, a beautiful city that houses a population of over 60,000 inhabitants. Alba Carolia Fortress, symbol of the city, is an impressive construction that can be admired by anyone. Being an important tourist place, the city is always visited by tourists from all over Europe. Alba Carolina fortress
The largest fortress in Romania offers many points of interest
that can be visited. The active tourist will pass under the Gates of the Citadel and will visit the two cathedrals, Horea's cell, the Museum and the Union Hall. There are three routes that can be followed during a day visit: the Route of the Gates of the Alba Carolina Fortress, the Route of the three fortifications, the Route of the Bastions of the Alba Carolina Fortress. There is a fee for the routes. We recommend that you arrive at the Third Gate before 12:00, when the guard is exchanged. At the end of the week, cannon shots are fired on this occasion. In fine weather (and if you still keep your feet) do not miss a walk along the ditch of the Citadel (3.5 km). There is also the possibility to rent bicycles or electric scooters. Here we also find one of the most important buildings in Romania, the Union Hall. The works of the Great National Assembly were held in this place on December 1, 1918. The Union Hall is guarded by 21 busts of leaders from 1918 in the political, cultural, military and representatives of the clergy. The building was built between 1898 and 1900, and in 1922 was considerably beautified.
