Rhetoric in the Community

Every month the local vintage community in Laredo gather for a pop-up market at

Frontera Beer Garden on San Bernando Avenue. The creators of the pop-up use rhetoric in the

flyers they advertise on social media and on local ads. The language used appeals to all ages, the

Hispanic community and those looking to be more active in the community.

The flyer advertises to all ages by promising something that everyone can enjoy. This is

easy to see in some of the words used on the pamphlet. The advertisement tries to pique the

interest by mentioning things everyone in the community likes, such as music, clothing, food,

and drinks. This type of environment that is advertised promises a fun and eventful time. In

addition, the word “Nostalgia” is a main point of the flyer as it is at the forefront of the

advertisement. The word “Nostalgia” communicates a longing for the past. This longing can be

satisfied by the music and clothes that will be present at the event. People with the same

nostalgic mentality can come together once a month to feel unified. Obviously, part of the

market’s goal is to make a profit. However, this is not their biggest goal. Their main goal is to

bring the community of Laredo together. Once convened, participants communicate with each

other by going up to vendor stalls and talking amongst each other as is usually done at a market.

The word market is a main staple used in the title, “Amigos Vintage Market”.

Amigo’s Vintage partnered with Frontera Beer Garden to invite the Hispanic

community out every month. In their most recent advertisement, it represents the

Hispanic community unapologetically. The way they described the market was as a

“Fiesta” instead of a party. In addition, they also described it as a 16 de Septiembre

celebration, which is prominent in Mexican Hispanic culture because it is Mexican

Independence Day. The value of this event is to celebrate Mexican culture and tradition.

The owners of the market show this as they use several Mexican flag emojis in the

description. The flyer also includes the word “amigos” and communicates that the owner

of the market “Amigos Vintage” take part in celebrating Mexican Culture. The market

will also have performances that will honor the beliefs and traditions of the Hispanic

culture. Such as, having traditional Mexican food, music, and dances. The participants

attending the market are communicating that they are proud of their Mexican heritage.

The rhetoric shown in the advertisement appeals to Laredoans by using all caps and

alluding that a long-awaited event has finally arrived by writing, “SEPTEMBER’s BIG

FIESTA is HERE”. Someone reading this would not want to miss out on such a large

event.

As aforementioned, they will be celebrating a party. This will draw a large crowd

of locals that want to have a fun time. By meeting new people and having a fun

experience, people could grow a desire to become more active in their community. As

described in the advertisement, the use of rhetoric is informing the local party goers to

attend because of the use of the word “Fiesta” which means it would be a huge fun event.

The people that fall into this category can see that in the flyer and see that the event

would also have a musical lineup filled with local bands performing. Food and drinks are

also made apparent in the flyer. Food and drinks normally mean a good time as those are

the fundamental aspects of a fiesta, which would attract the locals looking for a fun time.

In conclusion, rhetoric is used in many ways in the flyer for “Amigos Vintage

Market Hosted by Nostalgia”. From using rhetorical language such as the words nostalgia

and market to appeal to every demographic. In addition, to appealing to every

demographic age, the advertisement appeals to those of the Hispanic Mexican culture. As

the the flyer description includes Mexican flags to punctuate every sentence and use

Spanish words such as Amigos, Fiesta, and 16 de septiembre. The rhetoric also mentions

traditional music dances and performances. Rhetoric language is used a lot in this area of

the ad because of how much Hispanic culture they used to appeal to Hispanic locals to

attend. The advertisement also uses rhetoric to show people that want to have fun and

where to attend on the weekend, as it is marketed as a get together for the community. All

in all, rhetoric used in the local community shows and markets and invites people of

every culture, age, and those looking to have fun in their city.
