The bracket must be positioned so that as the S-F device is moved into i t s operating position, the spring
loaded latch on the tower vertical carriage is pulled forward far enough to allow downward travel Then
tighten screws firmly
The purpose of the latch is to prevent banging the S F device on the top of the tower when moved to
the rear

For cases where an obstruction behind the table can be hlt by the parked spot-film device during table
angulation, a "short park" position has been provided It reduces the distance from the table centerline
to the back of the spot-film device (when parked) from 58" to 53 7" (1473 to 1364 mm) (4 3 " change)
The change is made by shifting the latch to the alternate set of holes and by removing a bearing retaining
screw on the vertical carriage bearing block and replacing it with a bumper assembly, Ill 22
The use of this feature t o reduce the distance from the table to the back wall is not recommended Referring
t o System Manual SM B0120HH or GF,a 66" (1676 mm) distance from the table centerline to the back wall
is recommended and 62 5" (1587 mm) IS given as a minimum If this distance is less than 62 5", the back
wall had better be quite smooth Otherwise, early cable mortality is likely Even a t 62 5", passing behind the
table is difficult, and there is but 6" of exposed raceway between the motor base shroud and the floor-to-
wall adapter

INTRODUCTION
Perform this functional check after completing the installation of the RFWSFX Table, the spot-film device, x-
ray generator and image intensifier Tasks outlined herein require x-ray exposures and response from the
image intensifier for field limiting commands However, exact measurements of field sizes and placement of
the image on the film are covered in the RFX System Functional Check, Chapter 4 of SM BOlZOHH, SM
B0120GF,Direction 14922 or Direction 17030, and Direction 13894, System Field Tests for HHS Compliance
This check is also required in connection with PMS work and major service
Note that some Table and Spot-Film Device functions overlap For example, lock and power assist functions
are covered in this chapter and also in Chapter 4, SM BO122 for the table Redundant checks are unnecessary1
Also, omit any checks t h a t may have been made during the course of installation or service work, but fill out
the PMS Data Record Form t o show completion
The data nameplate, located on the rear surface of the spot-film frame, must state that this product
conforms to all applicable standards under 21 CFR Part 1020
Enter results of the Functional Check on PMS Data Record Form No F3843 for 88 SFD, (at end of OM Dir
14563) or Form No F4166 for 85 SFD (at end of OM Dir 14562) A copy of the data record should be filed
with X-Ray Room Log, Form #F3419
T h e Table of Contents indicates the specific part of the Data Record Form applicable to each check plus
references to consult in the event of a malfunction
0 Upon conclusion of this and related checks, BE SURE TO REMOVE ANY TEST JUMPERS, "CHEATERS"
AND TEST EQUIPMENT, AND TURN OFF ANY SERVICE SWITCHES1 Replace all trim covers and ac-
cess panels, reconnecting any harnesses and cables that may have been disconnected
To make this functional check, the following supporting software is required, particularly i f you are un-
familiar with the Spot-Film Device

unanticipated functions will result If photospot is selected a t the Fluoricon 300 panel, but
not a t the spoqilm panel
(1 When prepare bar is depressed, verify that a normal spot-film exposure will occur
(2) When the foot switch is depressed to the first step, a fluoro exposure must occur, and
when depressed to the 2'd step, there must be film recording, but without the cross
grid feature as specified in Table IV after "Enabled" Verify this
* d If photospot is selected a t the spot film panel but not a t the Fluoricon 300, spot-film rad
and photospot exposures must be inhibited
The potential confusion is magnified considerably by the introduction of logic terms used on the circuit
cards to label the various pots I e "HI", "LO", "RIGHT" and "LEFT"
a
-
Moreover, when we are confronted with a device that has both front and rear loading capabilities, (88 SFD
only), what is "Short" travel and what is "LONG" travel, To resolve this, references to travel of the carriage
and tray will assume that the starting position is the PARKED position Illustration 3 1 gives various desig
nations with the preferred ones indicated by larger letters However, to readily identify the pots on the
circuit cards with the various positions, these names are in parentheses For further details, consult Chapter
_-6, Sect!o> 4 - -
Verify that the carriage and tray move to the positions specified in Table V by selecting the programs
indicated and depressing the prepare bar Enter results on the PMS Data Record Form, Part I C, 3, Table V
This check is not easy with a permanently-mounted compact on the device You'll have to watch the-car-
riage from the back and also thru the front load slot Use flashlight If you can't be sure, this check will
h a v e to be done during the RFX System Check, Chapter 4, SM BOIZOHH, SM BOlZOGF, Direction 14922 or

8-1 Operation -- Should have been checked per Section 1 However one aspect to check a t this time
is to observe the Lat Long lock switch lighted button as the table is anguled to cw 88O and ccw 88'
The button light must not turn OFF because of gravity acting on the handle, (indicating dead band

1 5" (3 8 cm) is allowed for slow down a t each end of powered longitudinal travel, total powered
travel is about 33" (83 8 cm)
- -
Because measuring the maximum speed is beyond normal field effort requirements, you are not
being asked to do this Rather, operate the power assist and judge for yourself whether or not

83 Inhibit Logic
The power assist must be non-functional when the prepare bar sends the carriage to a rad position
and for the duration of the exposure I f another exposure is made before releasing the prepare
bar, the power assist will be inhibited again
To make this check, apply the lat long lock, energize power assist slowly and depress the prepare
bar (sametechnic set up as in 2 5 a above)
To avoid direct impact on the latch when parking, the bumper on the front pillow block on the tower
vertical carriage must absorb the force initially, but not to the extent that latching becomes difficult
Shim the bumper as required
To prevent running by the front latch position, a setscrew on the rear pillow block must be adjusted for
0 30" (076mm) clearance from the safety bumper stop when the latch is engaged (spot film device in
forward position)
Be sure to remove any test jumpers cheaters and test devices that may have been used while installing,
servicing and checking this unit All service switches must be turned off
Be sure to reconnect any harnesses and cables that may have disconnected For example, the top cover
harness must be disconnected when the top cover is removed to gain access to the interior of the spot-film
device Replace all trim covers and access panels
--
TAPE SWITCHES (88 SFD only) After everything is "buttoned up", check function of the tape switches
This must be done with care to avoid injury if they DON'T work1 With table power off, manually move the
carriage first t o see how you must hold your finger tips on the switches safely Then insert cassette and
energize the unit and try moving the carriage by depressing the prepare bar while maintaining pressure on the
tape switches Release the tape switches and again depress the prepare bar to make sure nothing else was
inhibiting carriage motion

1 1 Introduction
This Chapter is concerned with the Type 85/88 Spot-F ilm Device Refer to Table Su bsystern Service
Manual for correspondingTheory and Service information Due t o similarities between 85 and 88 Spot
Film Devices, all references in this chapter are t o 88 SFD However, most theories and Service techniques
apply t o both
This chapter provides essential theory and service information that has been planned to give the Serviceman
a better understandingof the equipment and to provide easy-to-followprocedures supplemented with
11 lustrations
The descriptions of thmry are intended to provide a familiarization with the particular system part or
function that will aid in troubleshooting and servicing
Information i s organized in a step by step logical manner to make it easier for the Serviceman to analyze
a problem and then be able to correct the malfunction and restore the equipment to operating condition
It is important that the serviceman thoroughly understands all functions of the spot film device to be
better equipped to associate a malfunction with a particular system and/or component
Chapter 4 provides installation check out procedures that should be consulted for a systems check before
attempting Service This will localize a trouble area and save time
Some of the service adjustments included in this chapter would be considered critical, and therefore are
not t o be disturbed unless checked out thoroughly Keep in mind that some adjustments were done under
controlled conditions with the aid of sophisticated calibrated test instruments Appropriate warnings or
cautions are included where this condition may apply
It is important t o note that the main frame of the 88 Spot Film is a magnesium casting with a special
chemical treatment to prevent corrosion For that reason any filing or drilling is not recommended
However i f filing drilling or tapping becomes necessary certain precautions should be taken because
of the possibility of igniting chips or filings
It is also noted that mounting holes in main frame are tapped for 8 32 UNC Helicoil inserts See local
vendor for information on installation or replacement

C SEC 4 CASSETTEKARRIAGE SERVO DRIVES
1 Drive Description
This drive moves the carriage in a lateral direction, toward the front and toward the rear of SFD I t s pur
pose is to transport the cassette laterally so as to position carriage as follows
Carriage drive moves from PARK to the X ray field to FRONT LOAD There are three x ray field stops
HI CENTER, and LO Positioning is further drscussed in subsection 4 3
The carriage moves laterally on two roller bearings (r h side) that run in a machined slot in the SFD cast
ing The carriage is a magnisium machined casting supported on the l e f t hand side by a long steel shaft
and bearings This method of suspension provides precision lateral travel necessary for transporting the
cassette
The servo drive motor will change direction when the supply voltage (+24 VDC) is reversed Carriage is
moved in a lateral direction through a series of belts idlers and pulleys A small 40 pitch belt connected
between motor pulley and a 72 groove sprocket pulley on a common shaft with drive belt pulley, drives
the 1/51 pitch belt to move t h e carriage The drive tkh is not-a complete loop, as the ends are attached to
two belt anchor pulleys on carriage frame
Refer to Illustration 4-1 Note, there are two idler pulleys One provides a turn around for the drive belt
and the other is to guide the belt to prevent it from jumping off pulley
Depending upon the applied voltage, servo motor will rotate in a direction to move the carriage forward or
back
A tachometer, mounted to end of drive motor, generates a feedback signal (speed of motor) which IS fed
to the Lateral Servo Drive Board S F l A l A 5 f v r n p a r i s o n wtth cassette position information and other
logic that determines when, and in what direction, drive IS to operate
A position sensor pot (R2)part of the servo mount assembly sends a signal to board (A7) telling the
logic circuits in what position drive is in
NOTE For identification purposes this IS the small 40 pitch drwe belt connected between t h e
drive motor (B2)and driven gear on the long shaft opposlte carriage drive pulley

(b) Inspect to make sure drive motor shaft is parallel to pulley shaft, otherwise premature belt wear
can result Loosen pulley shaft bracket screws and reposition to correct any misalignment
e
NOTE If motor shaft and pulley shaft are not perfectly parallel belt wear may result and can be
seen by a fine powder just under the pulley caused by belt chafing
(c) Check to see if there is sufficient side to side play for the 40 pitch belt when carriage i s operated
manually about 15 inches (381 mm) of lateral movement There should be no evidence of binding
in either direction of travel
NOTE It will be much easier t o make the above adjustment if two people are used One person can
check belt tension while the other adjusts set screw at rear
NOTE Two men are required to make t h i s adjustment, one t o check the belt tension, the other to
make and lock the adjustment
(a) Manually move carriage to PARK position (all the way to rear of SFD)
(b) Using a force dial indicator place on belt surface approximately over the bearing post nearest x ray
field opening With the other hand holding a scale, measure 200 inch (5 0 mm) of belt deflection
with an applied force of 1 0 Ib (4 44 N ) Min t o 1 2 Ib max (0 54 kg), as read on indicator
(c) To remove any belt slack, loosen the allen set screw in top side of carriage frame Back off lock
nut and adjust belt tension by turning allen screw clockwise until belt deflects 0 200 (50 mm)
(same as step 6) Then tighten hex lock nut and the setscrew in carriage frame to lock adjustment
NOTE The purpose of t h i s check i s to determine i f the front load cam spring i s holding the carriage
in the front load position rather than having the drive motor holding it which could cause
overloading and possible failure
(a) With power off, manually move carriage to the full front eject position See Illustration 4-6 Cam
roller should be centered on the sloped surface of the carriage casting See Illustration 4 3
(b) This procedure will adjust the travel distance (deadband) before the servo is energized For ease
of service access, the rear load position will be used Turn Servo (SF1A1 S3)off
Depress rear load button and manually move the carriage to the rear of the unit Observe that
LED CR82 is "lit" during cross travel and goes "off' when the carriage reaches the approximate
rear load position
Move the carriage in both cross table directions and observe that the LED will relite With the
DVM still connected a t TP4, note the voltage a t the two points where the LED just barely be-
comes "lit"
R102 will now be adjusted so the difference in voltages when the LED IS "lit" is 125 150
volts Adjust R102 counterclockwise t o make the difference larger or clockwise t o make the
difference smaller depending on which is necessary

Pull the carriage out so the voltage reading is 06V less than the voltage a t the top of the cam
Maintain the carriage in this position and turn R46 clockwise until it reaches its limit LED
CR82 should be "lit" Then adjust R 4 6 counterclockwise until the LED just goes "off"
Check that the LED will go "on" before the carriage is pushed over the top of the cam
1 Drive Description
The purpose of this drive is to position the inner carriage with cassette tray containing the film cassette
over the x ray field as commanded in the performance of selected frlm programs as follows
Drive moves the inner carriage to LEFT, CENTER, and RIGHT positions
The long drive moves the inner carriage and tray longitudinally, from one side to the other The inner car
riage i s supported by and moves on a steel shaft a t the front and two rollers a t the rear The shaft is
threaded on both ends and is held in place on carriage with hex nuts and lockwashers The rollers ride
in a machined slot of carriage and are held in place with round head screws and lockwashers
In operation the inner carriage is positioned by take up and pay out of the steel cables that are routed
around the pulleys Four pulleys are mounted on the carriage and two are on the cassette tray
As the servo motor changes direction of rotation, the cable begins to wind or unwind on reel which short
ens or lengthens cable passing around pulleys causing the tray to move right or left
The tray that holds the cassette is fitted to the inner carriage on the l e f t side with four button head screws
that slide in machined slots of inner carriage On the right side, there are two machined blocks or bosses
that contain Delryn bearings for support of the steel shaft Both the screws and the shaft provide support
and bearings for lateral tray travel
The cassette tray also contains the eject mechanism for ejecting cassette a t the front load position It
consists of a spring loaded push rod and mechanical linkage connected to the rear of tray When the
carriage/cassette are a t the front load position the push rod strikes a rubber stop inside SFD frame caus
ing rod to move back This actuates linkage that brings pressure to bear a t rear of tray pushing it out the
front opening
NOTE Cable adjustment is done only with the spring loaded hex sleeve a t the rear r h side of
frame casting as viewed from f r o n t Do not disturb the one on the L h side

(a) Back off hex lock nut a few turns Using a force dial indicator (wide tip on probe) place it up
against the hex sleeve that protrudes slightly from hole in casting Apply a force of 4 5 to 5 5
Ibs (20 N) to (24 4N) The spring inside the hex sleeve should compress to where cable just be
gins t o sag slightly This is approximately the right amount of tension
(b) By alternately applying the force indicator and progressively turning up the hex sleeve (clockwise)
with a spin tight wrench, proper cable tension can be obtained
(c) Check to see that all cable pulleys turn freely as cassette is moved from one position to another
This can be done with power off and cassette is then moved by hand
1 Positron Nomenclature
The following describes the various servo drive positions that take place for
NOTE The diagrams accompanying t h i s description help to illustrate graphically where the cassette
is relative to its movement within the SFD The large dots show cassette center position for
each mode of operation including rear and front load
Assume that cassette is in Park (rear) position When operator presses the Front Loa’d pushbutton, cassette
trdy will come forward and will appear through the front load opening Now, to begin a film program
operator must load a cassette into the cassette tray through the front load opening As soon as the load
sensars detect that a cassette is in place and that all drives inhibits are satisfied a film program can be
selected by pressing any one of the four spot film buttons
Atrer selection has been made the prepare bar is pressed slightly to the first step This energizes the drives
to move the carriage/cassette into position over x ray field B y pressing the bar a second time, exposure
tahes place which is indicated by a “bleep sound I f other than a 1 ON 1 program was selected, letting
up 311 the prepare bar allows the cassette to move to the next position ready for exposure And dgarn
pressing the bar exposure takes place For a 4 ON 1 film progrdm pressing the t a r and alternately let
ting up after each 1/4 film exposure will complete the cycle, finishrng up with cassette being ejected ar
front or rear load opening depending on the front load switch position
Dclring a film series the Lat and Long Drive plus the upper and lower mask drives are opet;ltirtg a i d fre
quently reversing motor direction to move both cassette/carriage and elements into the proper p o s i r i ~I
over x ray field according to program selected
NOTE Drive motors B1 and B2 are controlled by position sensing pots R 1 and R 2 The purpose o i
these pots is to signal Program Sequence Logic drive positions so that drive motor current
can be shut off at the appropriate time when carriage/cassette have reached their proper PO
sitions for film exposure

The following lists the drives and subsystems t h a t come into play during drive positioning
Refer t o Illustration 4 7 Note that from the rear load or PARK position the cassetteharriage must move
forward diagonally over 1 ON 1 position to the front load position For 1 ON 1 exposure cassette IS moved
to the center both laterally and longitudinally
Depending upon what load position (front or rear) cassette was loaded carriage/cassette will always end up
where initially loaded a t the completion of a program
For example assume that cassette i s in rear load a t the start Operator has a choice of loading film cassette
a t the rear or else he can$ress the Front Load Pushbutton bringing the cassette tray forward for loading
a t front
4 Positioning Theory 4 ON 1
Refer to Illustration 4 8 For this mode both the carriage and cassette drives must position the film over
the x ray field in 1/4 frames to obtain 4 exposures on one sheet of film Note that the first exposure takes
place on lower right hand 1/4 part of film with subsequent exposures being made in the order numbered
The table shows positioning for LAT/LONG drives during this sequence
Refer to Illustration 4 9 Note that the f i r s t exposure takes place on the right half of film then moves
cassette over x ray field to expose the left side of film Table shows drive positioning during this sequence

51 Description (Illustration 5 1)
1 General
The cassette loading function features a go or no go inhibit that prevents LAT/LONG drives from operating
until cassette is detected in the holder
The system employs a sensing circuit containing two individual photo detectors It is a fail safe feature
that prevents a cassette from being loaded improperly and possibly causing damage when transferred
Th2 two load sensors are mounted on extension brackets a t the front load and rear load positions of
cassette travel When the cassette tray moves to either position these sensors reflect right off the cassette
itself
As the cassette i s snapped in place a light beam produced by the Sensor emitter is reflected back from the
cassette itself and is detected by the sensor t o complete the operate enable circuit
e
,
4 Rear Load Safety Feature
The spot film device includes a safety feature that will shut down the LAT/LONG drives, if an obstruction
such as a hand in the way as the cassette is transferred These pressure sensitive tape switches when
activated produces an inhibit a t both drive boards on Pin 22 which prevents motors from driving
1 Objective-the purpose of the sensors and associated logic is to provide a logic signal, when the cassette
i s a t the load position (front or rear) that corresponds to the status of the cassette in the tray
In both front and rear the sensor detects the presents of the cassette when the cassette is fully seated in
the carriage The sensors themselves are optoelectronic assemblies containing light emitting diode and
phototransistor all in one package When a cassette is inserted the reflective flag on the carriage reflects
the diode light into the phototransistor which causes it to conduct This in turn produces the logic signal

The following drives and component parts are all located in the bottom pan assembly of the spot film
device Motors are all identical and could be interchanged for emergency service
Both the upper and lower mask drives are similar in construction and operate in the same way The only
difference between the two i s mask configuration and their use The upper mask has a lateral opening
and is used in making LAT 2 on 1 exposures The lower mask has a longitudinal opening and i s used in
making LONG 2 on 1 exposures Masks are not installed one above the other, but are separated by the
R&F grid
Masks automatically come into field when a LAT or LONG 2 on 1 or 4 on 1 spot film program IS initiated
&t all other times they are a t the rear PARK position
Mask Function
The masks are driven by high torque low rpm, reversible DC gearmotors (63)(841, that transmit motion
through drive pulleys and timing belts The ends of the drive belt are attached to the front and rear edge
of masks with tension springs and belt clip as shown in Illustration 6 1 Drive belts go around gear type
pulleys that engage belt grooves and effectively prevent slippage The masks move laterally in grooves of
two long plastic guides one on each side
Refer t o Illustration 6 1 Note the placement of the two switch block assemblies used for shutting off
drive motors after they reach forward or park positions In operation, a mask moving toward i t s pro
qrammed destination (forward or park) physically strikes one of the plungers shutting off the drive
power As shown switches are attached to bottom pan a t the center of mask forward and reverse travel
limit
The grid is operational only when the grid pushbutton i s pressed A t all other times grid remains a t the
rear or PARKED position
The grid drive function is the same as that explained for masks Also, this drive has motor cut off switches
(S1 1 ) and (S14) that function the Same as described in Para 6 1 The circuitry for grid IS contained on
boards SF2A3 A22 and SF2A30
The compression cone i s located on the underside of the spot film device and is operational only on
command by momentarily pressing the cone pushbutton This drive moves the cone laterally forward (for
examinations) and rear or park (when not in use) positions The compression cone will not operate either
forward or rear when the table horizontal stop switch is in the out' position

When the cone is in the forward position, a spring loaded latch engages, see Illustration 6 2 that locks it
in place mechanically When drive motor reverses to pull the cone back a spring connected between
latch lever and drive belt looses i t s tension allowing latch t o disengage locking pin releasing the cone

The motor cut off switching arrangement is similar to the other drives Illustration 6 2 shows the front
or forward switch and actuator assembly This switch i s actuated by action of the bumper striking the
actuating lever which mechanically trips the switch This same type switch and actuator is used for stop
ping cone in the reverse or PARK position The cone drive functions in the same manner as explained

6-4 Masks Grid & Cone Drive Belt Tension Adjustment (Illustration 6 1)
Check and/or adjust all drive belts for proper tension as follows
NOTE Masks grid and cone must be manually moved to center of travel before adjusting belt tension
Slightly-jiggle mask grid or cone to equal tension on both springs
(1) Usina a small scale measure the distance between the spring hook eye holes where they connect
betw>en belt and mask Place the scale just on edge of botheye holes not on centers It should
measure 0 1 inch ( 2 54 mm) additional over normal spring length which IS 1 1/4 inches (31 75 mm)
For final adjustment read 1 25 (31 75 mm) plus 0 1 (2 54 mm) for a total of 1 35 +/ 02 inches
(34 29 mm +/ 508 mm)
(2) To increase belt tension loosen respective drive motor mounting bracket screws and slide the
entire motor and bracket back slightly until proper spring measurement is obtained, then tighten
bracket screws See Illustration 6 3
65 Masks & Grid Drive Motor Cut Off Switches Check (Illustration 6-4)
Check as follows
( 1 1 Check to see if the upper and lower masks as well as grid cut off switches operate a t 0 2" ( 5 08 mm)
+/ 0 05 ' ( 1 27 mm) before striking their stops
This is necessary to prevent over driving masks full into stops Cutting off drive motor current
prior to striking stops prevents putting undue strain on drive belts and motors
12' T h e masks must be within 0 005 inches (0 127 mm) of contact with stop plate after actuating their
respective switches I f not within spec it is normally due to mechanical drag or improper drive belt
tension

The LVDT Detector board provides the inputs to the horizontal and vertical transducers which are located
in the power assist handle of the spot film device and converts the transducer outputs into DC control volt
ages which drive the motor power amplifier
The linear variable displacement transducer (LVDT) is essentially a transformer designed with a high degree
of sensitivity to the change in coupling produced by the movement of a small slug core within the winding
A single primary is coupled to two secondary windings which are wound opposite in direction and in series
With the slug core properly positioned the coupling between each secondary and the primary is equal and
since the phasing is opposite the secondaries cancel and the output is zero As the slug core is moved in
either direction from this "neutral" position the coupling to one secondary is increased and t o the other
secondary coupling is decreased, resulting in an AC output proportional to the distance the slug IS moved
from neutral The phase of the output voltage will be 180° in opposite directions as the slug is moved in
opposite directions from "neutral"
The LVDT detector board drives each transducer primary with an 8 KHZ sine wave whose amplitude can
be adjusted to provide the necessary level of output signal The oscillator also gates the FET switches to
the averaging detectors
The detector circuits are split into two channels, one for vertical and the other for longitudinal detection
Each detection circuit consists of two operational amplifiers whose inputs from the transducer are gated
0 on opposite phases of the oscillator output by FET switches When the FET switch is turned on the input
signal charges the capacitor between the amplifier output and the inverting input and the charge IS held
when the FET is off Overall DC gain is set by the feedback resistor The two storage amplifiers in each
channel produce signals which are equal and opposite in polarity under all normal conditions Since the
sum of the two amplifiers is normally zero any departure from zero can be considered a failure in the el
ectronics and used as part of the disabling signal to inhibit assist operation
In order to provide a zero adjustment for each channel feedback from the primary driver is summed with
the transducer output Since these signals are 180 degrees out of phase they can be made to cancel for any
selected position of the moveable transducer slug core which is designated as zero
The output signal for each channel is passed through a pair of diodes which provide a dead band around
the zero
Because of the zero summation of the two averaging amplifiers in each channel, transducer opens and
shorts are detected and will cause the operation of the power assist t o be inhibited This is done by passing
a small DC current through the transducer which will set the error output signal to the +5 volts DC Any
departure from this level by more than one half a volt will inhibit operation

NOTE When collimator control i s in manual mode the collimator can be adjusted up to the limit of the
Image Intensifier size or the size of the film format selected, whichever IS smaller The collimator
remains in the same position whether in Fluoro or Radiograph Also in Rad image will be the
same size as t h a t viewed on intensifier
In this mode control of the field dimensions i s fully automatic tor 1 ON 1 (full film) 2 ON 1 Lat or Long
and 4 ON 1 spot film programs When the Auto Format pushbutton i s pressed the appropriate masks
automatically move into place and the collimator blades automatically adjust to size according to the spot film
program selected Control is through boards SF2 A2 A25 S F l A1 A8 and SF1 A1 A6 The collimator
reference being applied across the pots also is applied to auto control LAT/LONG Collimator opening
command logic circuits of board SF1 A1 A6
NOTE When auto format i s called for logic circuitry switches from manual commands to present
auto command openings These preset auto commands also require proper logic inputs before
they will appear at A 1 A 6 51 for lateral and A1A6 49 for longitudinal and common
In auto mode the collimator can be manually adjusted to less than the image intensifier limit
during Fluoro or film format selected whichever i s smaller When switched to radiograph the
collimator moves to the size of the film format selected

95 service
NOTE The following service procedures describe the collimator control and command volrage adjust
ments that are to be made especially anytime a component or board has been replaced The
voltage adjustments described are for trimming the pots on board A6 in the SFD cabinet and
do not involve table electronics
This control would only require readjustment if either of the pots (R4) and (R5) failed, and had to be
replaced The control was mechanically adjusted a t the factory to produce the right amount of drag on
the lever I f replacement and/or adjustment is required, remove and disassemble control as follows
(1) Remove control assembly from panel per instructions, Chapter 8, Section 4 Remove control to a
bench for Service
(2) Before disassembling control, mark the center position of lever on mounting bracket somewhere
between mounting holes This mark will be used for reference upon reassembly
NOTE It is not necessary to completely disassemble the control if only one pot has failed Only the
affected pot and associated parts need be removed
(3) Remove four No 6- 32 U N C x 3/8" binding head screws and remove control bracket with parts
attached
(4) Loosen the N o 4-40 U N C x 3/8" fillister head screw and pull lever from pot shaft
(6) Loosen the No 4-40 U N C x 3/8" fillister head screw and unscrew lock collar
(7) Remove locking nut from threaded end of pot Separate pot from bracket and remove the 3/8"
wrought washer
(9) Replace defective pot with one of the same type Pat No 46 117439P51, 1K ohm, type J
NOTE Bracket must be assembled with bracket legs facing outward Also, position pot with locating
tabs in slots before locking in place with lock nut from the other side
(2) Assemble lock collar about halfway on threaded part of item Do not tighten screw a t this time
(3) Assemble spring washer with tab in notch of collar at approximately 12 o clock position
696
GENERAL ELECTRIC MEDICAL SYSTEMS 88/85 SPOT-FILM DEVICE
SM B8415l17
(5) Attach lever t o shaft and center it with mark made when removed Adjust pot for 50052 using VOM
NOTE Lever must be flush with end of pot shaft, then tighten lever screw
Adjustment
(1) Turn lock collar counterclockwise up against spring washer just enough to cause drag on lever when
moved
(2) Using a pull scale attach one end to control lever, and adjust collar by turning up against spring so that
a force of 0 5 Ibs +/ 0 1 Ib (2 22N +/ 0 44 N) is required in order to cause lever to move
NOTE This adjustment IS critical, in that, i f voltages are not precisely set, there is a change that a
violation of HEW (regulations covering x ray exposure control) is possible

The Ion Chamber Detector i s located inside the Spot Film Device above the x ray field opening as shown
in Illustration 1 0 1 The unit i s made up of the following major assemblies
(1 1 Pickup assembly,
(2) Collector assembly
(3) Preamplifier board
(4) Cover assembly
The assembly is suspended over the masks and grid on mounting brackets Brackets are attached to the sides
of lateral slide bearings with (81 anodized hex socket head screws Wiring going to the preamp is by pin
connector plug J11 This makes for quick disconnect and easy removal if ever required The detector con
nects into the Quantamat II Phototimer through connector J20 inside the syqtem cabinet
The Ion Chamber Detector functions in the spot film mode only It i s a device used for measuring the
amount of x ray energy radiated on i t s sensing or pickup area When the amount of x ray energy has
reached a preselected level the detector signals to terminate exposure It i s compatible with QuantamatTMI1
Phototimer for controlling exposure times The detector automatically compensates for changes in patient
a thickness and adjusts for opacity and technic factors of MA, KVP and SID The phototimer automatically
terminates x ray exposure according t o preselected film density, which is set a t SFD control panel
In the spot film mode the operator sets the graduated thumb knob a t the spot film device t o optimum
film exposure density (normal) and, once set will automatically and consistently provide the same density
contro! A setting below will provide lighter exposures, while anything abovr this will provide darker
exposures
Because minispot size is smaller than the sensing pickup area and in cross grid operation, one grid i s above
the detector and the other below special compensation i s required
In both these cases, exposure times must be shortened in order to keep density the same as selected
Cross grid compensation i s accomplished through R 6 which is located on SF2A2A22 Minispot cornpensa
tion is accomplished through R 15 which is located on SF2AZA23 In both cases when respective switch
IS depressed a resistance IS incorporated into the density circuit This resistance, which is paralleled across
R7 and part of R1, reduces the total resistance in the circuit By reducing the total resistance in circuit,
we increase the bias voltage applied t o the comparator circuit in the Quantamat which in turn shortens
the exposure time See Chapter 7, Schematics Control Panel and Bottom Pan
103 Service
Field service to the detector consists of performing leakage tests and a sensitivity adjustment Further
service is not recommended A defective unit is to be returned to the factory for exchange See Chapter 8,
for removal

Interlocks in the 88 Spot Film device are both electrical and mechanical
c
The inhibits are designed to prevent unconventional functions from taking place Inhibits are alsowsed
in conjunction with delay timers t o sequence events in a particular function
Therefore interlocks prevent an action from taking place conditional on an operate inhibit which must
signal go or no go before an exposure can take place
The piirpose of the x ray exposure delay i s t o provide a time lapse (200 milliseconds) between LAT /
LONG "Servo Ready" to "Satisfied" signal or carriage in position signal before x ray can take place
This insures that both carriage and cassette are properly positioned over the field after completion of
transfer and that, drives have had sufficeint time to settle down (non movement) before switch S4 closes
and x ray commences It is important that all drive movement has stopped and that carriage parts are
motionless before exposure starts, otherwise blurrinq of the image may result
The pot R 5 controls the amount of discharge of capacitor C17 which in turrl controls the rate of switching
of gate (22) Therefore the time delay necessary between "servo ready" to carriage in place has to be ad
lusted a t pot R 5
Normally this adjustment has been precisely and accurately made a t the factory using calibrated equip
ment Therefore, readjustment in the field is not recommended Before any attempt IS made to change this
adjustment provided in the X Ray Generator Service Instructions for the applicable unit

With top cover removed as described in Sec 1 ,carefully mark position of plate to preserve align-
ment of intensifier with source assembly (Not necessary on unit with new style adapter plate )
NOTE
There are three types of intensifier mounting plates One type for overhead suspension has
the release lock handle and interlock wring and the second type is for permanently mounted
models which is bolted in place The third type is used on FL-L300, L200,and L300C
For the overhead suspension type, operate release lock handle on right hand side of unit and move
intensifier up and out of the way
For the permanently fastened intensifier type, remove mounting plate cover halves and remove hard
ware securing intensifier to the mounting plate Carefully lift off intensifier and set it aside where
it will not become damaged
To remove the mounting plate for either type, remove (8) 1/4-20 hex nuts and (8) flat washers
fastening plate to the SFD frame Take care not to damage or tear the lead shielding on top and
bottom surfaces of plate See Illustration 8-5
To remove the third type of mounting plate, first remove four screws holding barium shield and
slide it upwards
--- -- __
Remove two screw holding intenslfier cable clamp to harness trough then remove 7 hex socket
head and 1 alignment screw as shown on Illustration 8-8 If only the intensifier is to be removed,
remove 4 socket head screws and eccentrics NOTE Do not loosen three alignment tabs These
wll hold alignment when intensifier is removed
SEC 8 IONCHAMBER
NOTE
Although it is possible to remove the ion chamber assembly from the top of the SFD after removal
of top cover Sec 1 and image intensifier mounting plate Sec 7, it is much easier t o remove once
the bottom pan has been lowered out of the frame (Sec 3)
The chamber with integral mounting brackets is fastened to the sides of the slide bearings with (4)
No 8-32 UNC socket head screws, one for each bracket See Illustration 8-1
Remove screws, disconnect connector J 11 on amplifier a t junction and lift unit out of bottom
