Students should have freedom to choose their own subjects in the National

examination for Upper Secondary Education. Do you agree or disagree?

Nowadays, it is often debated how much freedom students should be given while choosing the
subjects they study as their education is one of the most important aspects. Personally
speaking, I believe that they should have the freedom to pick subjects within a prescribed
syllabus in lieu of whatever they like in the Upper Secondary Education.
First of all, the freedom of selecting subjects at the university would make education more
effective and passion oriented for learners. They would not be forced to study subjects that
they have no interest at all. Though technology-related subjects are quite important, students
would not learn that much if they are forced to do so. For instance, if we force a school children
to learn how to code on a computer while her interest is in literature, it would not bring
favourable results. Thus, a student should be given freedom to pick the subjects she likes and
feels like she can be developed by that strong suits.
Second, students should be free to choose their favourite subjects at the school curriculum
because only themselves know which subjects they are actually adept at. Even parents are the
closest relatives with students yet not knowing what their offsprings are absolutely good at. For
example, mums and dads are unlikely to realize that their children are extremely active on the
right side of the brain, which means they are very creative and artistic. They vote Maths,
Physics for them as the main subjects at school as they want them to develop the left side of
their brain. As students are mature, they know that they should go for Literature or learning
foreign languages rather than logical subjects, which makes them regretful about the way they
chose in the past.
In conclusion, despite differing in opinions, I am of the belief that students should have liberty
to choose the subjects they are really fond of and good at, and within a prescribed syllabus at
school curriculum.
