Student Suicides
Suicide is a highly taboo behavior in Indonesia. According to religious beliefs, intentionally
ending one's life is considered a grave sin. Lately, cases of suicide in Indonesia have been
occurring frequently, especially among students. The main cause is that they often suffer from
severe depression.
The primary cause of the rising number of student suicides is the tremendous academic
pressure they face. Students often find themselves under intense pressure to excel, attain high
grades, and meet the expectations of their families and society.

Another significant factor contributing to the surge in student suicides is social isolation.
Many students feel socially disconnected, lonely, and have difficulty in interacting with their
peers, particularly in unfamiliar environments.

Mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety, are also substantial contributors to
the increasing rate of student suicides. Unaddressed psychological burdens can lead to
suicidal thoughts and actions.

These three causes are closely intertwined and often coexist, creating a highly perilous
environment.

Suicide can have significant social and emotional consequences on families and communities.
It can inflict trauma on those closest or in proximity to the individual who has taken their
own life. Those left behind are likely to experience psychological disturbance, seek
justification for the suicide, and even be triggered to contemplate a similar course of
action.2nd Effect: Suicide can also trigger a domino effect, where others influenced by the act
may also contemplate suicide.

To address the increasing prevalence of student suicides, efforts must be made to reduce
academic pressure, enhance mental health support, and foster stronger social connections. All
stakeholders, including universities, families, and communities, need to actively play a role in
tackling this issue to ensure that students feel safer, supported, and well-connected in their
academic environments.
