Rhetoric is the act of convincing and provides the reason for why certain outcomes
happen. Sparking conversations and effectively communicating is the act of properly creating a
rhetorical situation. Inspiring someone to act or to convince someone of your viewpoints are a
few examples of the many ways rhetorical situations are used in daily life. We find ourselves
using rhetoric daily and most people are not even aware of the rhetorical situations which they
are creating during the event of discourse. Discourse is a necessary step within communication
as it is the action of discussing and without discussion a rhetorical situation cannot exist.
The exigence of an artifact of discourse is the need which the speaker wishes to convince
or discuss. We define exigence “as the rhetor’s sense that a situation both calls for discourse and
might be resolved by discourse” which gives insight into the criteria which must be met for
discourse to occur (Grant-Davie 266). Discourse occurs in my life and especially within school
listening journal which was written to display in depth analysis skills and deep understanding of
classical and jazz music. In this example, my exigence as a student is to show musical literacy
and a firm grasp on music concepts such as tempo, pitch, and chord. - Insert quote from artifact
in relation to my interest within music or contains opinionated statements regarding music -. This
quote contains ideas which were written with the intent of describing an interest/opinion which I
formed based upon my knowledge at the time and serves the purpose of meeting my exigence.
