S.Y. 2023-2024
By: Rosemarie Acosta
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Grade 2 Mathematics course focuses on the Mathematical skills which are numbers and
operations, algebra, measurement, geometry, and problem solving. Students will count, read,
write, and rename numbers during number concept activities. They will also add, subtract,
multiply, and divide groups, numbers, or sets. Patterns and relationships are done by having
students classify and sort objects. They will compare attributes of objects by measuring the
objects using appropriate units. Students will use geometric models in classifying and relating
plane and solid figures. They will either work in groups or individually in solving problems
using problem solving skills and strategies such as graphing, tabulating, communicating ideas
with objects, words, pictures, and numbers. They will also use number sentences and equations
as representation to model real situations.
ESLG's EMPHASIZED:
Critical Thinker
Effective Communicator
Exemplary Worker
Caring Citizen
Self-Manager
Standard 2. Algebra
Students will be to apply algebraic concepts and processes to solve problems.
Benchmark Expectations:
2.1. Extend sequences of sounds and shapes or simple number patterns, and create and record
similar patterns
2.2 Create and extend patterns and describe the rule in words.
2.3 Model problem situations using objects, pictures, tables, numbers, letters, and other symbols.
2.4 Represent an unknown quantity as a variable using a symbol, such as □,
2.5 Describe and compare qualitative and quantitative change.
Standard 3. Geometry
Students will be able to describe, classify, and apply geometric concepts to solve problems in
real world situations.
Benchmark Expectations:
3.1. Identify and draw figures with line symmetry.
3.2 Classify and analyze plane and solid figures by their attributes
3.3 Describe and create plane figures: circle, rectangle, square, triangle, hexagon, trapezoid,
parallelogram and rhombus, and identify them in the environment.
Standard 4. Measurement
Students will be able to use concepts and tools of measurement to describe and quantify the
world.
Benchmarks Expectations:
4.1. Select appropriate units for length, weight, volume (capacity) and time
4.2. Develop common referents for units of measure for length, weight, volume (capacity) and
time to make comparisons and estimates
4.3 Apply measurement techniques to measure length, weight and volume (capacity).
4.4 Recognize that using different units of measurement will yield different numbers for the
same measurement.
Benchmarks Expectations:
5.1. Pose questions and gather data about everyday situations and familiar objects
5.2. Sort and classify objects by attributes, and organize data into categories in a simple table or
chart.
5.3. Represent data using objects, picture graphs and bar graphs
5.4 Describe the probability of chance events as more, less or equally likely to occur.
Benchmarks Expectations:
General Objectives
Algebra
Develop fluency with efficient procedures, including standard algorithms, for adding and
subtracting whole numbers, understand why procedures work and use them to solve
problems.
Use number patterns to extend their knowledge of properties of numbers and operations.
Develop an understanding of multi-digit numbers in terms of place value, recognizing
that place value notation is a shorthand for the sums of multiples of powers of 10.
