COURSE OF STUDY OUTLINE

S.Y. 2023-2024
By: Rosemarie Acosta

DEPARTMENT: Level 2 – Elementary

COURSE TITLE: Mathematics 2

Grade Level: Grade 2
Length: 40 minutes (5 times a week)
Number of Credits: N/A
Prerequisites: N/A

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Grade 2 Mathematics course focuses on the Mathematical skills which are numbers and
operations, algebra, measurement, geometry, and problem solving. Students will count, read,
write, and rename numbers during number concept activities. They will also add, subtract,
multiply, and divide groups, numbers, or sets. Patterns and relationships are done by having
students classify and sort objects. They will compare attributes of objects by measuring the
objects using appropriate units. Students will use geometric models in classifying and relating
plane and solid figures. They will either work in groups or individually in solving problems
using problem solving skills and strategies such as graphing, tabulating, communicating ideas
with objects, words, pictures, and numbers. They will also use number sentences and equations
as representation to model real situations.

RATIONALE FOR THE COURSE

This course involves program that is based on scientific research on how children learn
mathematics as well as on classroom-bases evidence that validates proven reliability. Students
are taught from ‘concrete to abstract’ model in presenting mathematical concepts and skills that
are coherent, digestible groups of lessons that will help students develop their skills in problem
solving, reasoning, communication, making connections, and designing and analyzing
representations as they are engaged in Number and Operations, Algebra, Geometry,
Measurement, Data Analysis, Probability, and Problem Solving that students should learn and be
able to use effectively in their everyday life.

ESLG's EMPHASIZED:
 Critical Thinker
 Effective Communicator
 Exemplary Worker
 Caring Citizen
 Self-Manager

General Objectives

By the end of the one-year program, students should...

Number and Operations and Algebra

 Develop an understanding of the base-ten numeration system and place value concepts
( at least to 1,000)
 Develop quick recall 0f addition facts and related subtraction facts and fluency with
multi-digit addition and subtraction.
 Apply appropriate methods to estimate sums and differences or calculate them mentally,
depending on the context and numbers involved.
 Discuss and use efficient, accurate, and generalizable methods to add and subtract multi-
digit whole numbers.

Algebra
 Develop fluency with efficient procedures, including standard algorithms, for adding and
subtracting whole numbers, understand why procedures work and use them to solve
problems.
 Use number patterns to extend their knowledge of properties of numbers and operations.
 Develop an understanding of multi-digit numbers in terms of place value, recognizing
that place value notation is a shorthand for the sums of multiples of powers of 10.

Geometry and Measurement

 Develop an understanding of linear measurement and facility in measuring lengths.
 Use standard units of measurement correctly and accurately.
 Estimate, measure, and compute lengths as they solve problems involving data, space,
and movement through space.
 Use geometric knowledge and spatial reasoning to develop foundations for understanding
area, fractions, and proportions.

Data and Analysis

 Collect data
 Organize data using graphs
 Analyze and read data
 Interpret data
 Predict outcomes
Problem Solving
 Solve arithmetic problems by applying their understanding of models of addition and
