G E O S Y N T H E T I C S G E O C O M P O S I T E D R A I N A G E A N D R E T E N T I O N L A Y E R
Roofdrain is supplied in rolls, packed in dark blue plastic bags for protection
against UV light. The bags should not be removed until the product is to be used.
The rolls are easily handled.
1. Carry or roll the Roofdrain from the storage area to the place of work. DO NOT
DRAG the rolls as this will damage the product, as will abuse by mechanical
equipment. Carefully harness the rolls when craning onto roof areas. The
915mm wide by 40 or 50m length rolls weigh approx. 75 kg when dry and are
approx. 1.3 metre diameter.
2. Roofdrain is laid with the geotextile filter on the flat side facing the soil backfill
and the cuspated side of the drainage core (which may also have a geotextile
covering) against the roof waterproofing. Note that when using the sheet form
of Roofdrain there is a geotextile flap on one edge of the roll.
3. Unless there is an R at the end of the product code on the roll label, the
Roofdrain will unroll with the cuspated side facing up and must be turned over.
4. In choosing the commencing point and direction of laying, consider the
intended access point for placing backfill material to avoid any unnecessary
need to traffic over the Roofdrain.
5. Roofdrain is supplied in strips of the appropriate width for use on profiled metal
roof systems and the strips are simply unrolled into position and cut to length.
6. When using Roofdrain in sheet form, unroll the first roll of Roofdrain into
position such that the geotextile flap laps up onto a side wall. Rolls can be cut
to length with a sharp knife. The flap can be held in position with mastic or
jointing tape.

7. The next roll should be placed in a similar way to the first and such that the
dimpled plastic cores butt together. The geotextile extends beyond the width of
the dimpled HDPE core at one side to create an overlap flap.
8. Continue laying further rolls in a similar manner to create a continuous blanket.
9. At the far wall a 500mm wide geotextile strip is used to form the flap from the
geotextile to the wall.
10. Special types of Roofdrain are used on steep sloping roofs.
11. On steeply sloping roof areas, unless other means of support are provided, the
Roofdrain must be installed as a continuous length over the apex of the roof
with approximately equal lengths both sides, otherwise an anchorage must be
provided at the apex of the roof.
12. Roofdrain can be cut and sealed around columns and other roof slab
penetrations.
13. Non load bearing walls and planters can be built off Roofdrain by providing a
concrete pad that limits the compressive stress to 50 kPa. Otherwise, the
cusps must first be filled with mortar. To do this the geotextile must be cut at
one side, peeled back and mortar hand placed into the cusps taking care that
mortar does not fall through the perforations. Finally the geotextile is replaced
and the wall construction can commence.
14. The collected water is usually discharged from Roofdrain into adjacent
drainage outlets in the roof slab or downpipes or to collector pipes as shown on
drawings.
15. Before backfilling, inspect the installation to make sure that there are no gaps
in the geotextile where soil can enter the core. Ensure that water can exit freely
from the Roofdrain if the outlets are along the ends or sides.
16. Backfill material is usually good quality topsoil of minimal thickness or sand for
feature paved pedestrian areas. For large areas of paving it is preferable to use
Deckdrain or Roofdrain of the appropriate compressive strength laid with the
cuspated side facing up (to avoid undue water retention in the paving sand)
17. At least 150mm of temporary backfill material should be maintained over the
Roofdrain where mechanical plant is working. Temporary access routes for
mechanical plant should be protected with boards.
18. In the unlikely event that the Roofdrain geotextile cover is damaged either
before or after installation small areas can be repaired using a patch of similar
textile at least 300mm larger than the damaged area. If the cuspated drainage
core has been damaged, then this should be cut out carefully so as not to
damage the underlying liner and a new piece of Roofdrain inserted.
19. Standard Roofdrain contains a UV stabiliser which means that it can be
exposed to sunlight for up to 14 days in temperate climates. In climates with
extreme sun then exposure should be limited to 3 days. Prolonged exposure
will cause some loss of strength. Please contact our technical department for
more specific advice and details of special enhanced UV resistance.
20. There are no known COSHH hazards associated with the installation of
Roofdrain.
ANCILLARIES
Narrow roll of textile 500mm wide for edge detail. Sandbags for temporary ballast
of overlaps. Adhesive for special joint details if required. Jointing tape to hold the
geotextile flaps in position.
TOOLS

Utilising Roofdrain 40
Case Study
Background
Project at a glance
Cherwell Street in Oxford is the redevelopment of a for-
Project Green roof installation on student housing
mer factory site into student accommodation.
Location Oxford
The small factory standing previously on the site has
Completed Jan 2012
been demolished and in its place a development of five
Contractor Geogreen Solutions
student accommodation units have been built.
Products • Roofdrain 40 - Bespoke for project with ABG
These have been constructed using an insulated con-
protection fleece bonded to lower side and
crete framework and topped with a archtitect designed filter fleece bonded on upper side
green roof construction. • Pregrown Sedum Mat
• Irrigation - Drip line system with control
panel
Problem
Whilst the use of green roofs is increasingly common
place the one designed on this scheme presented a
number of challenges to both the specification and in-
stallation of the system.
Firstly the roof substrate was finished using a pre-insu-
lated timber construction; this gave very limited load-
ings for the green roof construction to work within both
during the construction process and in the finished roof.
The loadings were so restrictive that it prohibited even
the use of substrates typically used in the construction
of green roofs.
The second issue to overcome related to the archi-
tectural requirement of the roof design; stipulated as
a curved roof with a maximum pitch of thirty degrees.
ABG in conjunction with their own installation business,
Geogreen Installations, were able to work with the cli-
ent to overcome both challenges and supply and install
a green roof system suitable for the project. 200mm gravel verge

and an ABG filter geotextile bonded to the top.
Case Study
This bespoke composite provided both protection to
the deck waterproofing to prevent damage from the
construction process whilst allowing precipitation to be
drained/attenuated in the 40mm drainage core.
This composite layer was then over laid with the irriga-
tion drip line system before the finishing layer of a pre-
grown sedum mat was installed.
The challenge of the sloped roof was addressed by the
introduction of a rough finish to the deck waterproof-
ing; this was achieved by applying sand to the upper
surface of the liquid applied waterproofing.
This rough finish created friction on the interface be-
tween the waterproofing and the protection geotextile
prebonded to the underside of the Roofdrain 40.
An aluminium upstand was installed around the perim-
eter of the roof retained the gravel border and offered
offer additional support to the Roofdrain 40 composite
and sedum mat.
The use of innovative ABG solutions allowed this pro-
ject to be completed both in budget and in time with
a green roof that overcame the complications arising
from the design.

Apartment Block – Sheffield
Project Overview
Project: Installation of an Intensive Green Roof System & Green Wall on a prestigious new
apartment block in Sheffield.
Location: Sheffield, S1
Extent of Works: Flat Roof: SUDS tank, drainage board, growing media, hard & soft landscaping to
the second storey roof area including planters.
Green Wall: Steel wire framework, growing media, hedera helix & irrigation system.
Size: 1100m2
Project Background/Requirement
The 32 storey development was constructed with the main aim
of creating the most desirable address in the city. As such it
was deemed from the outset that the development had to be
sympathetic to its immediate surroundings.
