Back when I was a kid, playing tug of war taught me the power of teamwork; I became much

more dexterous playing bamboo jack, while listening to my grandmother’s lullaby nurtured in
me a love for culture and arts. It saddens me that children today don’t have such experiences,
they learn to throw a tantrum when they don’t get to watch their favorite Youtube videos. This
has led to a concern that growing up today is becoming increasingly difficult. Yet there are still
people who hold that the opposite is the case.
On the one hand, children’s upbringing in contemporary society is fraught with a multiplicity of
problems. Prominent among the is the lack of meaningful experiences that help youngsters grow
cognitively. Gone are the days when young children played interactive games like hide and seek,
which enhanced their memory, spatial awareness, and problem-solving skill. Today, safety is
prioritized at the expense of growth: children are confined in the home, where one of a few
things they can learn from is playing with LEGOs. Advanced technology is also a hazard to
children’s development. When their eyes are almost always fixed to the screens, they themselves
so engrossed in nonsense YouTube videos that they are distracted from meaningful activities
such as reading books altogether. What is more concerning is that they may grow up with
extremely poor posture, eyesight, among other physical issues.
However, people who hold the view that modern-day upbringing is purely problematic
miss the bigger picture. It is true that education is more accessible, and literacy and proficiency
in computer affords the best opportunity for learning. From educational websites to forums like
Quora and facebook groups, young individuals can share their knowledge as well as learn from
others living in almost every corner of the world. Youngsters nowadays also enjoy a greater
range of extracurricular activities, whereby they can develop critical skills and abilities in order
to become well-rounded citizens. By attending model united nations, for example, the young can
improve rhetorical skills and become more confidence.
Numerous technological advances and profound insights into child development make it possible
for parents to design a scheme that ensure optimal growth from their child. These range from
encouraging involvement in educational games, to exposing children to languages at young ages.
