“What is the impact of social media on mental health and self-esteem of the youth?”

Research design

In order to understand what could be the impact of social media on young generation’s mental stability and
self-esteem, not only quantitative, but also qualitative data collection and analysis should be done and here we
have to admit the important role of qualitative data analysis. In this research, using a survey as “probably the
best method available to the social researcher who is interested in collecting original data for describing a
population too large to observe directly” would bring useful results (Babbie, 2016). Among students as
representatives of the youth would be extremely useful: alongside with close-ended questions, where young
people could choose the responses that suit the practice of using social media and what kind of impact they
observe from social media usage, open-ended questions, where students themselves respond to given questions
would be considered as the way to gain qualitative data and, what is more, there is no biased approach by the
interviewers, which allows to obtain more realistic responses.

Data collection

The survey that contains both open- and close-ended questions was conducted among representatives of
young generation to show quantitative and qualitative data related to how social media can influence their
mental health and self-esteem. Moreover, the comparative method was used when the responses of respondents
on given questions within survey had been considered.
