Show Choir Performance Outline

Theme/Story:
- Perseverance
- I would chose pieces that show the arch of a struggle, a breakthrough, and an
acceptance, and I would end the set with this piece as a big finish.
Backing Music:
- In reality, I would aim for a live band, but use recordings if that was not possible.
Vocal Warmup #1:
- Staccato arpeggios: sol fa mi re do on “(h)a” switching out consonants for “b”, “t”, “k”,
etc…
- To tie in with the staccato elements of the piece on “Dont. Stop. Me. Now”
Vocal Warmup #2:
- “How are you” on P4 “do - fa - do”
Vocal Warmup #3:
- Ascending thirds: Do - mi - re - fa - mi - so - fa - la - so - ti - la - do - ti - re - do
- Descending thirds: do - la - ti - so - la - fa - so - mi - fa - re - mi - do - re - ti - do
- Then in a two part round starting when group one sings “mi” for the second time.
Rehearsal Plan:
Steps:
- Learn the notes!
- First, we went through the whole song to get a feel for how it went together,
identifying possible problem areas and the general form of the song.
- Second, we started really digging into the notes of each part. We decided where
splits would happen and also that, for the most part, we would sing melody for the
time being but split when we felt we could successfully do so with the timeframe.
- Second, Jonah, Charis, and Kamryn primarily figured out the choreography and
worked really hard to help myself succeed and feel comfortable with it.
- We started putting each part together with choreo and vocals until we would
perform the whole song.
Choreography:
Did one person take charge or was it a group effort?
- Jonah, Charis, and Kamryn did the brunt of the choreography work but also took John
and I’s suggestions if we had them.
What are the movements that were chosen?
- I could not for the life of me describe them but I will try.
- Forming a ^ from left to right ( charis, john, jonah*, mikaela, kamryn) *point
- Slowly rise on “and the world”
- Form change to a v on “cuz I’m having a good time”
- Grapevine right, then left, “tiger”, chug thing? Turn
- Do it again but shake
- Repeat this for the most part, it is all I remember.
Reflection
Overall, I enjoyed this assignment. I definitely learned a lot about show choir and what it
takes to start and maintain a show choir. I had more fun with the performance than I thought I
would, but it was still definitely far out of my comfort zone and caused me a lot of anxiety. I
have been so conditioned by my previous institution to expect criticism at every second that I
still have not broken out of my expectations. I am still learning to be comfortable with this aspect
of choir and theatre, and this assignment got me one step closer to just that.
