COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course intends to familiarize students with principles of surgery along with familiarization with
terminology and abbreviations for efficient and effective chart reviewing and documentation. It also
explores various conditions needing surgical attention, focusing on epidemiology, pathology, as well as
primary and secondary clinical characteristics and their surgical management.
This course covers the knowledge about preoperative and post-operative care of patients as well as
complications related to surgical infections and management.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
Demonstrate the pre- and post-operative care of patients.
Describe presentations of major surgical problems; establish correlations among clinical observation,
surgical (operative) pathology, and the physiological alterations achieved through surgery.
Differentiate the surgical health care delivery to both inpatients and outpatients in a variety of settings.
Describe the surgical management of disease.
Recognize the entire treatment cycle of the surgical patient from diagnosis to operative management and
through recovery.
At the end of this course students will be able
