SCRIPT IN TEST OF HYPHOTHESIS

CATHERINE:

HELLO,Everyone welcome to this presentation and mastering statistics here were finally going
to qonquer the topic of HYPOTHESIS TESTING its one of the most central things that every
students study in all STATISTIC COURSES and its give a lot of people problems and im very
excited to explain HYPOTHESIS TESTING because…..i believe I can break it down into bite-sized
chunks so that as long as you follow me through this video you’ll will understand everything
there is to know about HYPOTHESIS TESTING the good news is its not really a difficult concept
to understand but the bad news is most of the textbooks make it entirely too hard. Ahmm the
main reason the hypothesis testing seems difficult to a lot.. specially for me and the other
students out there..its because there is a lot of different cases that you have to consider and in
those different cases you kind of have to handle a little bit differently so just take it from birds
eye point of view there’s going to be some cases when we have some SAMPLES and they’re
gonna be some cases when we have larger samples and there’s gonna be some cases when
we’re talking about this parameter and that parameter and in those different cases we’re going
to have to use different distributions slightly different techniques to get there but…. The over all
idea of WHAT A HYPOTHESIS TEST IS? It’s the same for all of these kinds of problems so what
we’re gonna do now is go over some essential information.

So what is hypothesis testing?

RJ LOPEZ: Hypothesis testing- Is a premise or claim that we want to test. And the
purpose of hypothesis testing is to determine whether there is enough statistical
evidence in favor of a certain belief or hypothesis about parameter. Or it is a
decision making process for evaluating claims about a population.

Who discovered hypothesis testing?

LOPEZ RJ: RONALD FISHER – In the 1920s , Ronald fisher developed the
theory behind the P value and ZERZY NEYMAN and EGON PEARSON
developed the theory of hypothesis testing.
CATHERINE: So were gonna talk about something called the NULL HYPOTHESIS.
Now what do you think the word NULL.

RJ LOPEZ :It Means for those of you who’ve studied math or computer
programming or something NULL just generally means zero sometimes it can
mean zero or something empty but in generally when were talking about the null
hypothesis is about the default hypothesis the thing that’s kind of established.

NULL HYPOTHESIS- Ho – currently accepted a value for a parameter.

CATHERINE: So when we’re looking at a parameter of a population maybe the

mean of the IQ or something like that we’re gonna have some establish and
currently established thing typically maybe there some previous studies out there
that say you know the birth weight of humans is between this, that’s the currently
accepted things so we would typically call that H naught that’s the currently
accepted hypothesis but generally some new guy comes along and wants to
challenge and he believe that’s not true so they come up with.

RJ LOPEZ:

ALTERNATIVE HYPOTHESIS : H sub a – also called in some books the research

hypothesis and it involves the claim to be tested.

RJ LOPEZ: So typically the way it goes just think about science in general right?
So NEWTON ISAAC comes up with a law of gravity apple falls on his head comes
up invents calculus and vents law of gravitation, so that would be kind of the
currently accepted thing but then a couple hundred years later EINSTEIN comes a
long and present some alternative hypothesis that says “no no no no gravity
doesn’t happen because that gravity is really space time and its curvative and let
me show you were gonna test this alternative hypothesis and were gonna do lots
of experiments”and it turns out EINSTEIN was right NEWTON has a very simplified
version of gravity thats not totally accurate but EINSTEIN version is more
complicated .
CATHERINE

The difference between H naught H sub A is so let say

Ho & Ha are mathematical opposite

So what are the possible outcomes of this test, we want to test the
alternative hypothesis so is thought to be true its of like a court youre
innocent until proven guilty so were going to assume that the null
hypothesis is still true unless the evidence says that we need to reject that
null hypothesis in which case this thing we say to be is true
