1. Introduction

1.1 The Product

The BA-40 is an Extinguishing Release Module which can be used in
conjunction with conventional or analogue addressable fire alarm
systems.

The module consists of 2 extinguishing zones. Each zone utilizes

common functions (see Functional Description in this handbook) and
controls and monitors an extinguishing zone (an area, a room, a
machine, an electrical cabinet etc.). Several BA-40s can be used if
more than two extinguishing zones are required.

1.2 About the Handbook

This handbook is intended to provide the information necessary to
install and commission the BA-40. It also includes a functional
description, plus various application examples.

2.5 Time Delay Facility

2.5.1 General
A time delay facility allows personnel to evacuate the protected
location prior to a release of the fire extinguishant.

Both alarms, i.e. the 1st alarm and 2nd alarm, have to be activated
before release of the extinguishant. In any case, the extinguishant will
never be released before a predefined delay period has ended. The
1st alarm will always start the delay period.

The following applies:

• When the 1st alarm is activated, the predefined delay period will
start.
• If the 2nd alarm is activated before the delay period ends, the
extinguishant will be released when the delay period ends.
• If the 2nd alarm is activated after the delay period has ended, the
extinguishant will be released immediately.
• If the 2nd alarm is not activated, the extinguishant will not be
released.

2.8 Monitoring Data for Signal- and Control Inputs

The inputs mentioned in this chapter are activated at closing or
opening contacts in series with a resistor. The stated resistance
values are approximate values within the tolarance ranges. All inputs,
except for the manual/ automatic release, have latched function.

2.8.1 Signal Inputs 1 and 2

Theses inputs are break and short-circuit monitored, and have a
latching function. If the BA-40 module and the fire alarm control panel
are installed in the same cabinet/rack (control cable <5m), a control
transistor (open collector) can be used. This solution requires a proper
0-volt connection between the panel’s 0-volt and the 0-volt in the BA-
40 module (cross-section approximately 1,5 square mm).

Peripheral installations of the BA-40 module requires the use of a

potential-free relay contact which serves as a control output from the
fire alarm control panel. In this way, the necessary monitoring and
control data will be maintained.

The BA-40 module monitors the control cable via monitoring resistors
mounted on the control output relay.

Example: Potential free contact connection. Example: Transistor connection.

The transistor connection solution should be
used only when the BA-40 module and the
fire alarm control panel are to be mounted in
the same cabinet/rack. The maximum length
of the 0-volt conductor is 5m (cross-section:
1,5 square mm).

Characteristics / Monitoring values:

• Active signal via relay contacts or transistor via serial resistor
(R2=270Ω)
• Break and short-circuit monitored via end-resistor
R1=2KΩ. /R2=270Ω
• Breaks limit ≥ 3 kΩ
• Short-circuit limit < 52Ω
• Active signal approximately >52Ω, <910Ω
• Normal signal approximately >910Ω, <3kΩ

2.8.2 Manual Release Input

This input is break and short-circuit monitored and has a two-stage
function:
• Stage 1 activates the common alarm output, 1st alarm in the actual
zone and the common 1st alarm output. This stage is normally
controlled by the cover switch (S2).
• Stage 2 is a manual release signal controlled by means of a
operating push button (S1).

Example:

R3 R2

Signal transmitter

S1/R2 = Manual release switch (R2=270Ω)

S2/R3 = Cover switch (Alarm, R3=910Ω)
R1= Monitoring (2KΩ)

Characteristics / Monitoring values

• S2/R3 activates 1st alarm and alarm sounders (R3=910Ω)
• S1/R2 activates manual release (R2=270Ω)
• Break and short-circuit monitored via resistors
• Breaks limit ≥ 3 kΩ
• Short-circuit limit < 52Ω
• Alarm (Stage 1) > 490Ω <910Ω
• Manual release (Stage 2) > 52Ω < 490Ω
• Normal > 910Ω < 3kΩ

Manual release is achieved when switch S2 is closed when the

release switch (S1) is operated. The release resistance is based on a
parallel connection of R1, R2 and R3, plus the total cable resistance.
One or more manual release switches (BW-20A) may be mounted on
the same manual release course. Ref.pt. 5.1.

2.8.3 Pressure Monitoring in Tank

The input is break and short-circuit monitored, and has a latching
function.

The input is connected to the pressurestat contact in the extinguishant

tank, for example, a pressurestat contact.

The pressurestat contact is a normal closed contact which is open if a

too low pressure occurs.

Example:

• R1 and R2 are monitoring resistors R1=2 kΩ and R2=270Ω
• Breaks limit ≥ 3 kΩ
• Short-circuit limit < 52Ω
• Low pressure > 910Ω < 3kΩ

2.8.4 Automatic Inhibit

The input is break and short-circuit monitored, and does not have a
latching function.

An active signal inhibits automatic release in the actual zone. The

input is also used for termination of the delay period. Activation of the
input during delay period inhibits automatic release.
Reactivation of switch after end of delay period, and activate signal on
input 1 and 2, gives immediate release. See pkt. 5.2.1 (Note).

2.9 Indication and Control Outputs

BA-40 provides three different outputs; 24V DC power outputs, 0 volt
transistor outputs and potential free relay outputs.

2.9.1 24V DC Power Outputs

Power outputs are used for Sounder Alarm Outputs and Release
Outputs.

2.9.2 Sounder Alarm Outputs

Characteristics / Monitoring values:
• Monitored for breaks and short circuiting by using a 2kΩ resistor
• Output 24V DC, 0,5 A fuse (a break in the fuse will give steady
light in power fault LED H15)
• Breaks limit ≥ 4kΩ
• Short circuiting at approximately < 150Ω
• A serial diode is used

2.9.3 Release Outputs

The release outputs are dimensioned for a continuous release current
at 1A or a short current pulse at maximum 3A (the output’s are current
limited). The outputs are both break and short-circuit monitored.
The release output voltage is dependent on the input power supply
voltage. Normally, this equals the batterys charging voltage, 27,2V
DC. The voltage drop in the release circuit is between 4-5V. This
gives a release voltage of 24-27V DC
URelease ≈ UPower - UDrop
The monitoring is done via a serial diode and solenoid.

Characteristics / Monitoring values:

• Output voltage: 27,2 V – (4-5V) ≈ 22V DC
• Break monitored:. > 5kΩ
• Monitoring diode 3A (e.g. 1N5625/1N5404) must be connected in
series with a solenoid if < 800Ω
• When the solenoid resistance is > 800Ω a diode is not required
• When the solenoid resistance is > than 3kΩ, an end-resistor 2kΩ
must be used across the solenoid
• Current limit at 3A

2.10 Silence Alarm and Reset of Module

Two inputs are used to reset the BA-40 module after activation of
inputs/outputs (or possible release of gas).

• «Silence Alarm» silences audible indication at the sounder alarm

outputs.
• «Reset» resets all activated inputs and outputs.

2.10.1 Silence Alarms

Input L35, 36.
Closing contacts silences the sounder alarm outputs (sounder,
sirene). The input is non-monitored.

2.10.2 Reset
Input L37, 38.
Closing contacts resets all activated inputs and outputs. The inputs
are non-monitored, but closing contacts > 2-3 seconds gives a pulsing
signal on Power LED and common fault output (same fault warning as
program faults).

Activated inputs and outputs are reset at closing contacts. Activated

LED indicators will turn off when contact is open.

3.2 Mounting on Standard TS-rail

The BA-40 module can be mounted directly onto a TS-35 or TS-32
rail. End straps are used to prevent displacement in case of vibrations.

The TS-rail must have a length of 250 mm. When the BA-40 module is
mounted onto the TS-rail, the mounting height will be approximately
65 mm.

The BA-40 module is made to easily fit into different types of cabinets;
fire alarm control panels, connection cabinets or special operator
cabinets for extinguishing systems.

3.3 Mounting in Cabinets

For practical reasons and for flexibility, the BA-40 module is not
accommodated to a specific cabinet when it is delivered. The
installation of the extinguishing system will determine the most
suitable placement of the module. Alternative placements are in fire
alarm control panels, in connection cabinets together with other
control equipment, or in its own enclosure in the vicinity of the
extinguishing zone.

In installations where manual operation of the BA-40 functions are

necessary, BA-40 must be installed in cabinet/ rack with the operator
panel BAV-45.

3.8.1 Monitoring communication between BAV-45/xx and BA-40

The internal communication between the control panel BAV-45 and
BA-40 is automatically monitored when BAV-45 is connected to BA-40
through a ribbon cable. A steady, yellow light on the fault indicator for
power supply (BA-40 ) indicates a failure in communication, and the
fault output is activated.
Communication, ON/OFF, is monitored by a jumper on the right side
of the ribbon cable-connector on the BA-40.
When BA-40 is delivered without BA-45, the jumper must always be
installed. To activated the communication towards BAV-45, the jumper
must be open (the jumper must be open when connecting BAV-45 to
BA-40).

5.1 Manual Release

Break and short-circuit monitored input

The control input for connection of manual release switch has a two-
stage function:
• Stage 1 activates the common alarm output and indication outputs
for active signals on one of the control inputs.
• Stage 2 releases the extinguishant in the actual zone.

The release switch is a switch box with cover and pressure switch.
The switch in the cover activates the stage 1 function. The pressure
switch activates the stage 2 function (release).

5.2 Automatic Inhibit

An active signal on the input will block an automatic release of the
extinguishant (zone 1 or zone 2).

The indication output for automatic inhibit is activated. Manual release

is possible.

The input is break and short-circuit monitored. The resistors R1 and

R2 must be mounted according to the drawing below. An active signal
on the input inhibits automatic release. Inhibit remains as long as the
switch is closed.

The input is also used as an abortion switch to stop the automatic

5.10 Common First Alarm Output

This output is a potential free relay output that is activated when there
is an active signal on one of the two control inputs for a zone. The
output is common for zone 1 and zone 2.

The output gives a 1st alarm warning to external monitoring

equipment, for example, a building management system.

The output is not monitored for breaks. The output is reset when the
module is reset.

5.11 Sounder Alarm Output

This output is a common alarm output for connection of audible or
optical warning. The output is activated when there is an active signal
on one of the control inputs. Reset is done by using the input Silence
Sounder Alarms. The output is reactivated if a new alarm occurs.

The output is monitored for breaks and shortcircuiting. A serial diode

and a 2kΩ end-resistor is used. If polarity dependent alarm sounders
area used (with built-in diode), the external diode can be omitted.

• The maximum load is 24V/0,5A.

• Breaks limit ≥ 4kΩ.
• Short circuiting at approximately < 150Ω
• Polarity dependent alarm sounders.

5.13 Outputs for Release of Extinguishant

This output is a ≈ 22V DC release output that is used to activate the
release solenoid for a zone. The output is break and short-circuit
monitored. Because of voltage drop in the release circuit, the release
voltage is 4-5V lower than the supplied voltage.
UOut = UIn - UDrop

Example: Monitoring diode

+ 47
Zone 1
release output
- 48
Zone 1 Solenoid
+ 49
Zone 2
release output
- 50

Zone 2 Solenoid

• Output voltage: UOut = UIn - UDrop ≈ (20-22V)

• Fuse: 1A
• Breaks limit ≥ 5kΩ.
• Monitoring diode: 3A (type 1N5625 or 1N5404).
• The output current is limited to 3A during a short pulsing voltage
(by the use of initiators).
• The monitoring diode must be connected in series with a solenoid
if < 800Ω
• If the resistance of the solenoid is larger than 3kΩ an end-resistor
2kΩ must be connected in parallel across the solenoid
• Maximum monitoring current: 1mA
