Parts of a Leaf (lesson 1/2)

Objectives (skills/attitudes/understandings): Students understand and know the

parts of a leaf and their functions.

Learning outcomes: Students understand how the parts of a leaf interact and
function to support the leaf and the tree's growth.

Essential questions: How do the parts of a leaf interact with one another to
support the tree's health and growth.

Intro (5 Open on slide 112: Ask students if anyone remembers the function of a
minutes) leaf? And to raise their hand if they know they answer
2:05-2:10 - Answer: To create food and sugars for the tree using the process
known as photosynthesis

Introduce the video and jot down the terms on the whiteboard for students
to reference (dim the lights and close the blinds while the video plays)
- Tell students to pay special attention to these words
- Axial bud, blade, midrib, petiole, vein, twig, and
Photosynthesis
- Pause Points:
- 0:32 Reaffirm that this is the function of the leaves and state
that just like the trunk, the leaf has parts that help it to create
food for the tree!
- 1:20 Remind students to pay attention to the following and
listen out for the parts of a leaf listed on the board!!
- 1:30 Tell students the axillary bud is also referred to as the
Axil!!

Hook (10 CIRCULATE, CIRCULATE, CIRCULATE!! - make sure all students are
minutes) on task and writing down the information
2:10-2:20
Tell students there will be a quiz tomorrow… so make sure to be
paying attention and to be taking down notes.

Slide 114 - 119

1) before revealing the function on each slide…
a) prompt students to raise their hand to explain what they
think the function is (try to limit responses to one per part)
2) Model on the board for students how they should be taking down
the notes start with the name
a) (Slide 114) Axil: Angle between the stem and the leaf (has
buds).
Date: Nov. 16/23 Subject: Science - Parts of a leaf

b) (Slide 115) Blade: Provides a large surface for sun and

photosynthesis.
c) (Slide 116) Vein: Carries water and minerals
d) (Slide 117) Midrib: Provides Support
e) (Slide 118) Petiole: Attaches the leaf to the plant.
f) (Slide 119) Twig: Small branch, or division (stem)

Body (10
minutes) Worksheet: (Timed 5 minutes)
2:20-2:30 Once students have completed their notes hand out the Parts of a Leaf
worksheet for students to fill in:
- Tell students they will have 5 minutes to use their notes to label the
parts of a leaf
- Students must use a pencil!!!
- When all students are finished labeling, have them take out a red
pen or marker to mark their work!
- If students labeled a part incorrectly, have them cross out the term
they used and write with a red pen the correct term!!

Scavenger hunt:
There are leaves hidden around the classroom, have students look
around to room to find a leaf
1) Once they have found a leaf students will glue it onto a sheet of
lined paper
2) Next students will label the parts of a leaf and include the function
on their page. (using their self marked worksheets to help them)
a) Students will put this copy into the rings of their science
binders behind the parts of a leaf note.

Conclusion Have students turn in their self assessed worksheet to the science bin at
(2:30-2:35) the back of the class.

Remind students there will be a quiz on the parts of a Leaf tomorrow and
we will begin class with a review and then move onto the quiz.
- We will begin tomorrow's class with a quick review of the parts of a
leaf and their function tomorrow!! (similar to the review we did for
the parts of a tree)

Instruct students to put their Scavenger hunt leaf sheet into the rings of
their science binder and to put their binder away into their desk and to
take out their whiteboards for RTI

- Tape (to stick the leaves around the room)
- Glue sticks
- Red pen or marker

Assessment:
