The War on Gun Control

Gun control is the limiting or restricting of an individual’s right to possess or perform

with a firearm. They are a set of laws that regulate, “the manufacture, sale, transfer, possession,

modification, or use of firearms by civilians.”(Britannica, 2022) Laws are enforced to make sure

firearms aren’t easily accessible. My stance on gun control is that an individual should be able to

carry a firearm legally for his or her protection. I agree that any citizen with proper paperwork

should be able to possess a firearm by law. Reason being, I believe that an individual should

have the comfort to feel protected anywhere. In America, we lead with the highest homicide rate

by firearm. “Guns were the leading cause of death by homicide (67.7% of all homicides) and by

suicide (51.8% of all suicides).” (Britannica, 2022) This goes to show gun violence in America is

very high at an alarming rate. It's better to be protected, than left with nothing. It's too easy to

lose your life in America. My stance or viewpoint really goes to connect with my upbringing and

how I was brought up as a child. Not being from America, there's a different perspective on

surviving, not mentioning a poverty stricken background. If the opportunity to be able to protect

oneself is given, most wouldn’t turn that down. I believe that the right precaution should be taken

before the purchase or selling of a firearm. Such as background checks, criminal history checks,

and previous career history prior to purchasing a firearm. Reason being, I believe that the

average law abiding citizen is up to standard or up to keeping should be able to protect himself in
case of an emergency or situation. Meaning the purchase of a firearm is used strictly for defense,

or hunting cattle/wildlife or whatever the case may be. In 2010 there were 230 “justifiable

homicides” in which a private citizen used a firearm to kill a felon, compared to 8,275 criminal

gun homicides (or, 36 criminal homicides for every “justifiable homicide”). Of the 84,495,500

property crimes committed between 2007 and 2011, 0.12% of victims (103,000) protected

themselves with a threat of use or use of a firearm.(Britannica, 2022) This statement gives an

estimate to show how possessing a firearm is needed. “Governor Greg Abbott today signed

seven pieces of legislation into law to protect Second Amendment Rights in Texas.”( Press

Release, June 20210) Greg Abott stance on gun control is protected, his viewpoint is to keep the

second amendment in government. However he does not agree with raising the age limit from 18

to 21. The gun laws in Egypt prohibits any citizen from purchasing or possessing a gun. It is the

Ministry of Interior which issues a gun or firearm permit in Egypt. “Applications for permits

must be accompanied by a police record and include the photograph and signature of the

applicant.” (WikiProcedures, 2021) Meaning no citizen can have a gun.
