Chapter 1: Creating Simple Images

GIMP is one of the most popular free and open source image editing software. The full form

of GIMP is GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is used for free-form drawing, image
resizing and cropping, image correction and more specialised tasks. GIMP was released in

January 1996 as the General Image Manipulation Program by creators Spencer Kimball and

Peter Mattis.

To Open GIMP:

1. Click the Start button.

2. Select All Programs.

3. Select GIMP 2.
Creating a New Image File:

1. Go to the File menu.

2. Click the New option.

The Create a New Image dialog box appears. This allows you to set the width, height,
background colour and image related options.

3. Select 640x480 option from Template drop-down list.

4. Click Ok.

Drawing a Flower Pot with Flowers

Among several paint tools in GIMP, the Pencil tool can be used to draw a flower pot with

flowers. It acts like a normal pencil which is used to draw images or sketches in GIMP.

To draw a flower pot with flowers:

1. Click the Tools menu.

2. Go to paint Tools option.

3. Select the Pencil Tool. The Pencil tool is activated.

4. Left-click and drag the mouse to draw the pot, plant, flowers and leaves.

5. Release the mouse button once you complete the figure.


Colouring The Flower Pot:

As the pot, leaves and flowers in your picture are closed shapes, you can use the Bucket Fill
tool to colour them. The Bucket Fill tool allows you to fill single colour in a shape.

To do this,

1. Click the Tools menu.

2. Go to Paint Tools.

3. Click the Bucket Fill option. The Bucket Fill tool is now activated.

4. Click Foreground & Background colors option in the Toolbox. The Change Foreground

Color dialog box will open.

5. Select a foreground colour as red and click OK button.

6. Click inside the flower petals one by one to apply the colour.

7. Similarly, colour the leaves and the flower pot.

8. Select the background colour as a shade of yellow and click on the white background
on the image to apply the colour.

Enhancing The Image:

To apply a gradient:

1. Click the Tools menu.

2. Go to Paint Tools.

3. Click Blend option. The Blend tool is now activated.

4. Go to Tool Options dialog and select the Soft light option from the Mode drop-down list.

The Tool Options dialog displays various options related to selected tool.

5. Keeping the left mouse button pressed, drag the cursor in the direction you want the
gradient to be filled.

6. Release the mouse button to apply the gradient.

7. Save the image by clicking the Save option from the File menu.

Saving the File:

To save the GIMP file:

1. Click the File menu.

2. Select Save As option.

3. Type the file name as flower pot and choose a location.

4. Press the save button.

A GIMP file is saved with the .xcf flie extension.


TECH TERMS:

GIMP: GIMP is a free and open source image editing software that is used for

free-form drawing, image resizing and cropping, image correction and more

specialised tasks.

TEMPLATE: The Template option provides various pre-defined sizes for an image.

PIXELS: Pixels are a set of points that make an image. A pixel is the the smallest

component of a digital image.

PENCIL TOOL: The Pencil tool allows the user to draw freehand lines or sketches.

TOOLBOX: A Toolbox holds all the tool icons available in GIMP that are used to work

with images.

BUCKET FILL TOOL: The Bucket Fill tool allows the user to fill colours.

BLEND TOOL: The Blend tool allows the user to fill a gradient blend of colours in

an area.

GRADIENT: Gradient is a set of colours arranged in order.


Chapter 2: USING SELECTION TOOLS
The Selection Tools menu option is found on the Tools menu. It provides various types of

selection tools that can be used to select an area on the stage.

 Rectangle Select Tool: The Rectangle Select tool allows the user to select a

rectangular area.

 Ellipse Select Tool: The Ellipse Select tool allows the user to select a circular

or oval area.

 Free Select Tool: The Free Selection tool, or Lasso, lets you create a selection

by drawing it free-hand with the pointer, while holding down the left mouse

button.

 Intelligent Scissors tool: Intelligent Scissors tool has some features in common

with the lasso, some features in common with the path tool and some features all

its own. It is useful when you are trying to select a region defined by strong color

changes at the edges.

 Handles: Handles are squares and rectangles on the corners and sides of Rectangle

Select and Ellipse Select for resizing the selection areas.

 Marching Ants: The boundaries of selection highlighted with dotted lines are also

called as marching ants.

 Blend Tool: The Blend tool allows the user to fill gradient colours in the selected
area.
RECTANGLE SELECT TOOL:
Steps to Change the colour rectangular area of an image:

1. Go to file menu and click open option to open an image in GIMP

2. Click on the Tool menu →Selection tools → Click Rectangle Select


tool.

3. Alternatively, you can also activate the Rectangle Select tool by


clicking the Rectangle icon from toolbox.

4. Keeping the left mouse button pressed, drag to select the rectangular

area of an image.

5. Release the mouse button . A dotted rectangular selection, also


called as Marching Ants, appears.

6. Select the foreground Colour box and choose any colour.

7. Click Bucket Fill Tool from Toolbox and apply it.


ELLIPSE SELECT TOOL:
Steps to Change the colour Ellipse area of an image:

1. Go to file menu and click open option to open an image in GIMP


Software.

2. Click on the Tools menu →Selection tools → Click Ellipse Select


tool.

3. Alternatively, you can also activate the Ellipse Select tool by clicking
the Ellipse icon from toolbox.

4. Keeping the left mouse button pressed, drag to select the Ellipse

area of an image.

5. Release the mouse button . A dotted oval selection, also


called as Marching Ants, appears.

6. Select the foreground Colour box and choose any colour.

7. Click Bucket Fill Tool from Toolbox and apply it.


FREE SELECT TOOL:
Steps to Change the colour Irregular area of an image:

1. Go to file menu and click open option to open an image in GIMP


Software.

2. Click on the Tools menu →Selection tools → Click Free Select


tool.

3. Alternatively, you can also activate the Free Select tool by clicking
the Free Select icon from toolbox.

4. Press the left mouse button and drag along the border of the image.

5. Release the mouse button at the point where you started. The
selection is closed automatically by connecting the current pointer

location to the starting location.

6. Marching Ants appear to denote the selected area.

7. Select the foreground Colour box and choose any colour.

8. Click Bucket Fill Tool from Toolbox and apply it.


INTELLIGENT SCISSORS SELECT TOOL:
Steps to Change the colour Irregular area of an image:

1. Go to file menu and click open option to open an image in GIMP


Software.

2. Click on the Tools menu →Selection tools → Click Scissors Select


tool.

3. Alternatively, you can also activate the Scissors Select tool by clicking
the Scissors Select icon from toolbox.

4. Press the left mouse button and drag along the border of the image.

5. Release the mouse button at the point where you started. The
selection is closed automatically by connecting the current pointer

location to the starting location.

6. Click inside the selected area to convert it into a selection.

7. Marching Ants appear to denote the selected area.

8. Select the foreground Colour box and choose any colour.

9. Click Bucket Fill Tool from Toolbox and apply it.
