GIMP is one of the most popular free and open source image editing software. The full form
of GIMP is GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is used for free-form drawing, image
resizing and cropping, image correction and more specialised tasks. GIMP was released in
January 1996 as the General Image Manipulation Program by creators Spencer Kimball and
Peter Mattis.
To Open GIMP:
3. Select GIMP 2.
Creating a New Image File:
The Create a New Image dialog box appears. This allows you to set the width, height,
background colour and image related options.
4. Click Ok.
Among several paint tools in GIMP, the Pencil tool can be used to draw a flower pot with
flowers. It acts like a normal pencil which is used to draw images or sketches in GIMP.
4. Left-click and drag the mouse to draw the pot, plant, flowers and leaves.
As the pot, leaves and flowers in your picture are closed shapes, you can use the Bucket Fill
tool to colour them. The Bucket Fill tool allows you to fill single colour in a shape.
To do this,
2. Go to Paint Tools.
3. Click the Bucket Fill option. The Bucket Fill tool is now activated.
4. Click Foreground & Background colors option in the Toolbox. The Change Foreground
6. Click inside the flower petals one by one to apply the colour.
8. Select the background colour as a shade of yellow and click on the white background
on the image to apply the colour.
To apply a gradient:
2. Go to Paint Tools.
4. Go to Tool Options dialog and select the Soft light option from the Mode drop-down list.
The Tool Options dialog displays various options related to selected tool.
5. Keeping the left mouse button pressed, drag the cursor in the direction you want the
gradient to be filled.
7. Save the image by clicking the Save option from the File menu.
GIMP: GIMP is a free and open source image editing software that is used for

TEMPLATE: The Template option provides various pre-defined sizes for an image.
PIXELS: Pixels are a set of points that make an image. A pixel is the the smallest
PENCIL TOOL: The Pencil tool allows the user to draw freehand lines or sketches.
TOOLBOX: A Toolbox holds all the tool icons available in GIMP that are used to work
with images.
BUCKET FILL TOOL: The Bucket Fill tool allows the user to fill colours.
BLEND TOOL: The Blend tool allows the user to fill a gradient blend of colours in
an area.
Rectangle Select Tool: The Rectangle Select tool allows the user to select a
rectangular area.
Ellipse Select Tool: The Ellipse Select tool allows the user to select a circular
or oval area.
Free Select Tool: The Free Selection tool, or Lasso, lets you create a selection
by drawing it free-hand with the pointer, while holding down the left mouse
button.
Intelligent Scissors tool: Intelligent Scissors tool has some features in common
with the lasso, some features in common with the path tool and some features all
its own. It is useful when you are trying to select a region defined by strong color
Handles: Handles are squares and rectangles on the corners and sides of Rectangle
Marching Ants: The boundaries of selection highlighted with dotted lines are also
Blend Tool: The Blend tool allows the user to fill gradient colours in the selected
area.

Steps to Change the colour rectangular area of an image:
4. Keeping the left mouse button pressed, drag to select the rectangular
area of an image.
3. Alternatively, you can also activate the Ellipse Select tool by clicking
the Ellipse icon from toolbox.
