Chapter 3: Creating Collage


1. Layers:
Layers are the transparent sheets in GIMP that holds different objects in an

image.

2. Feather:
The Feather option is used to blur the selection borders by softening the edges

so that is fades out smoothly. The default unit which appears on the Feather

selection dialog box is pixels, but you can choose other units, such as inches,

centimeters and millimeters, from drop down menu.

3. Scale Tool:
Scale Tool allows you to resize the image.

4. Flip Tool:
Flip Tool enable you to flip layers or selection either horizontally or vertically.

5. Opacity:
Opacity determines the transparency levels of an image.
Feather Selection and Create Collage (Steps):

i) Open the Tiger.jpg image file in GIMP Software.

ii) Using the Free Select Tool, select the Tiger from the image.
iii) Go to Select menu and click the Feather option.

iv. The Feather Selection dialog box appears. Set the value as 50.000 and

click ok button.
v. Go to the Edit menu and click Copy option to copy the feathered selection.

vi. Open the image, Forest.jpg, using the open option in the File menu.
vii. Go to Edit →Paste as→ New Layer.

viii. A new layer containing the Tiger image is created in the active image of the

forest.

ix. Go to Tools → Transform Tools → Scale. The Scale Tool allows you to resize

the image.
x. By using move tool you can change the position of an image.

xi. Go to Layer Menu →Merge down for removing selection.

xii. Similarly, Feather Rhinocers, Elephant and Giraffe images and paste them

over the forest background.

xiii. you can add appropriate title to an image.

Setting Transparency:
You need to add the Wildlife Conservation logo banner to the collage to complete it.

To do this:
1. Open the Wildlife Conversation logo.jpg file.

2. Go to Select→ All

3. Go to Edit → Copy.

You need to paste the Wildlife Conservation logo banner to the forest background.

4. Go to Edit → Paste As→ New Layer.

5. Move the Opacity slider and set it 75.0 to adjust the transparency of the banner.
IT Nugget
The default unit which appears on the Feather Selection dialog box is pixels, but you can

choose other units, such as inches, centimeters and millimeters from the drop-down menu.
