ACTIVITY 2

2.1: Creating a new image (from scratch).


Select File > New
At this point, choose the following parameters:
Width: 960 px
Height: 540 px
Advanced options: Fill with: White

Save the file as surname_activity2.xcf (xcf is the extension of the GIMP files)

2.2: Selecting an area and using the bucket


Choose the “ellipse select tool” and select an area similar to the one on the image:
We are going to fill in the ellipse with a color. To do this:
First we have to choose the color by selecting and changing the foreground color (choose a green color)

Now we use the bucket fill tool and click in the ellipse:

Save the file.

2.3: Changes can be done only in the selected area.


Change the foreground color to red.
Select the brush tool and draw some lines crossing the area selected (the ellipse). You’ll see that nothing
is painted out of the ellipse.

Change the foreground color to blue.


Deselect everything from the menu: Select > None
With the brush tool again, draw something crossing the ellipse and see the difference.

Save the file.

2.4: Eraser tool.


Change the background color to white.
Select the Eraser tool and delete part of the drawing.

Change the background color to yellow.


Select the Eraser tool and delete part of the drawing. See what happens

Save the file.

2.5: Alpha channel (transparency).


From the menu: Layer > Transparency > Add Alpha Channel
Select the Eraser tool and delete part of the drawing. The erased area shows a squared grey pattern. This
pattern means transparency. Let’s see it in the next exerise 2.6.

Save the file.

2.6: Layers.
Change the foreground color to pink.
Add a new layer: Layer > New Layer. In the New Layer Window:
• in the Layer name field, write “pink_Layer”
• in the Fill with field, choose to fill with foreground color.

Put the new layer below the 1st layer

See what happens to the transparent area.

Save the file (remember: surname_activity2.xcf ) and Upload it to the Virtual Classroom.
