Rising in Houston: Projects to Look Forward to in 2023 and Beyond

Greater Houston Partnership January 4, 2023

Summary:

After a year of significant growth in Houston, there were a lot of new jobs
developed and facilities for companies and universities built. The GHP anticipates more
financial stability for the coming years with new development projects. One such project
is 1550 on the Green, a project on the edge of Discovery Green across from GRB. It will
include terraces around the park and retail space. A similar project is planned downtown
called the Buffalo Bayou East plan which will further develop an underutilized part of the
city. This project will take over 10 years and will include many amenities for the public to
access. The Camden project will increase the amount of greenspace for Houston
residents with a park that will open to the public in late 2024. In Midtown and Uptown, a
97-million-dollar project is developing residential units and retail areas surrounding the
preexisting commercial background of Houston. Among these projects and others, the
Houston area will see significant commercial, residential, and greenspace project
development over the next decade.

Project Topic Connection:

My project also focuses on a large development project that will benefit the
greater Houston community. Similar to how the “University of Houston opened its $80
million College of Medicine” and “Fortune 500 company Hewlett Packard Enterprise”
opened a Houston area headquarters, my project relates to furthering innovation in our
area. The project that my mentor is working on at NASA under the Office of Planning
Integration and Environmental is what I am basing my product idea on which results in a
similar purpose to the projects listed in the article. My project also focuses on urban
design and architecture and developing public green spaces. I can use ideas from the
sites planned for Houston listed in the article to create my own product and master plan.
The plans for these sites have elements that have been published online and could be
very beneficial research for learning about the kinds of projects that are already coming
to the Houston area. The images of the sites include unique and modern architecture,
parks, retail and office space, residential areas, and manmade water features. These
will serve as inspiration for my product.

Personal Response:

After reading the article, I was very interested to see how the development of
these projects will impact the residents of the Houston area. Many of them look like they
will increase the beauty of downtown Houston and create public spaces that people can
benefit from. I thought that they would help make Houston a more attractive place to live
in the future with new residential areas being built. I felt excited that Houston will be the
site of these unique projects and I look forward to seeing them complete. I had a few

questions about the projects that the article mentioned such as when they will all be
built and how they are expected to impact the economy of our area. I was also
wondering whether these projects would include tourism in the Houston area and how
the image of our city across the country will change. As these projects begin
construction in the coming years, I am interested to see if they bring in more companies,
more jobs, and more impact on the economy. I hope that they will result in a more
beautiful and thriving greater Houston area.
