Ch. 12 Kinematics of a Particle

Section 12B-1: 12.7 Section 12B-2: 12.8
Section 12B-3: 12.9 Section 12B-4: 12.10

Class Note for Section 12B-3:

12.9 Dependent Motion of Two Particles

Case 1: sA + lCD + sB = lT
∆sA + ∆sB = 0 ∆sB = - ∆sA
vA + vB = 0 vB = - vA
aA + aB = 0 aB = - aA

Case 2: 2sB + h + sA = l
2∆sB + ∆sA = 0 ∆sB = - (1/2)∆sA
2vB + vA = 0 vB = - (1/2)vA
2aB + aA = 0 aB = - (1/2)aA

Example Problems for Section 12B-3:

EP1. If the end of the cable at A is pulled down

with a speed of 2 m/s, determine the speed at which
block B rises.

2sC + sA = l1 (1)
sB + (sB - sC) = l2 (2)

Eliminating sC from eqs. (1) and (2),

sA + 4sB = l1 + 2l2
vA + 4vB = 0 vA = 2 m/s ↓
vB = - (1/4)vA = - (1/4)(2 m/s) = - 0.5 = 0.5 m/s ↑ Ans.

EP2. Determine the time needed for the load at B to attain a

speed of 8 m/s, starting from rest, if the cable is drawn into the
motor with an acceleration of 0.2 m/s2 .

sA + 4sB = l
vA + 4vB = 0
aA + 4aB = 0
aB = - (1/4)aA = - (1/4)(0.2 m/s2 ) = - 0.05 = 0.05 m/s2 ↑

For the load B only:

v = vo + ac t → 8 = 0 + 0.05t → t = 160 s Ans.
