NUMERICAL APTITUDE – III

Let us discuss the method of simplifying the equations having the fractions/ mixed
fractions.
To simplify an equation with a set of mixed fractions connected by addition or
subtraction operators, write down all the integers as one set and all the fractions as other set
and simplify each one separately and combine the two results.

13. Which is the smallest fraction among the following?

7 4 6 8 9
1) 2) 3) 4) 5)
9 5 7 11 13
ANSWER: 5
To compare two fractions multiply numerator of a fraction with the denominator of other
fraction with the respective integers. Then compare the integers and apply the relation to
the respective fractions.
7 4
Comparing and , then 7 × 5 = 35 and 4 × 9 = 36
9 5
4 7 4
36 > 35, > . So cannot be the smallest fraction.
5 9 5
7 6
Now compare and , then 7 × 7 = 49 and 6 × 9 = 54
9 7
6 7 6
54 > 49, > . So cannot be the smallest fraction.
7 9 7
7 8
Now compare and , then 7 × 11 = 77 and 8 × 9 = 72
9 11
7 8 7
77 > 72, > . So cannot be the smallest fraction.
9 11 9
8 9
Finally compare and , then 8 × 13 = 104 and 9 × 11 = 99
11 13
8 9 8
But 104 > 99 > . So cannot be the smallest fraction.
11 13 11
9

14. If the following fractions are arranged in ascending order (from left to right), which of
them will be second from the left end?
3 6 9 5 4
, , , ,
5 11 17 7 13
6 4 3 9
1) 2) 3) 4) 5) None of these
11 13 5 17
ANSWER: 4
Divide the numerator and denominator of each fraction with respective numerator.
3 1 6 1 9 1 5 1 4 1
= = = = =
5 1. − 11 1. − 17 1. − 7 1. − 13 3. −
The numerators of all the fractions are same and the denominator of the last fraction is
4
highest. So the fraction value is least. Therefore takes the first position from left when
13
arranged in ascending order. The smallest of the remaining four fractions takes the
second position.
3 6
Compare and , then 3 × 11 = 33 and 6 × 5 = 30
5 11
3 6 3
33 > 30, > . cannot be smallest of the four.
5 11 5
6 9
Now compare and , then 6 × 17 = 102 and 9 × 11 = 99
11 17
6 9 6
102 > 99, > . cannot be smallest of the four.
11 17 11
9 5
Now compare and , then 9 × 7 = 63 and 5 × 17 = 85
17 7
5 9 5
85 > 63, so > . cannot be smallest of the four.
7 17 7
9
is the smallest of the remaining four and takes the second position from left in
17
ascending order

15. What will come in place of the question mark (?) in the following question?
