COURSE SUMMARY
This course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the
principles, strategies, and practices involved in efficiently managing production
processes and operations within various business contexts. Whether they aspire to
become a future manager, entrepreneur, or industry leader, this course will equip them
with the knowledge and skills to optimize production systems, enhance operational
efficiency, and contribute to the success of any organization.

Throughout this course, students will delve into the world of manufacturing and service
operations, exploring key concepts such as process design, supply chain management,
quality control, and inventory management. These concepts will be delivered with the
help of class activities, presentations, simulations games and discussions. By the end of
this course, students are expected the have a solid foundation in production and
operations management, enabling them to make informed decisions, tackle challenges,
and drive continuous improvement in a dynamic business environment.

COURSE FLOW
Module 1 (12 Hours): introduction to Operations Management

Operations Management: introductions, activities of Operations Management;


operations performance, trade-off between performance objectives; Operations
strategy.

Module 2 (15 Hours): Operations design
Process design: meaning, process types, process design: Design of Product and services:
good design, benefits, challenges; Layout and flow: types of layouts, layout selection,
layout design.
Location planning.

Module 3 (20 Hours): Planning and control


Nature of planning and control, Capacity management, measuring demand and capacity,
alternative capacity planning; Inventory planning and control, Supply chain planning,
types of relations in supply chain, supply chain improvement.

Module 4 (12 Hours): improvement


Quality management, conformance to quality, Total quality management, Operations
and new age technology: CAD, CAM, IoT.

TEACHING-LEARNING STRATEGY

The entire course will be conducted in lecture cum discussion mode with emphasis on
class participation and discussion. Students are expected to come prepare with the pre-
readings and participate actively in the discussions and exercises.
