ENGL 1301 Visual Analysis Outline Assignment

Instructions: Following the example of Dr. Nelson in the Visual Analysis Outline Demo video, organize your
analysis of the visual components and rhetorical situation of your visual text. Complete each chart with
information from your visual analysis notes worksheet to plot what you need to discuss in each section of your
essay.

Section 1: Introduction

a. Identify the visual text, its genre, and relevant facts about the context of its production:

Description The beach photograph of Casablanca captures a stunning scene of natural beauty and
elegance. The image features horses, a dog and people roaming or playing around the sandy
shore freely. The sunlight illuminates the scene, casting a warm glow on the horses and
creating a magical atmosphere. It’s a captivating sight that showcases the harmony between
natures and all these creatures.

c. Identify (1) what message the visual text seeks to convey and (2) how the visual text’s design components
help it convey this message (this will be your controlling idea):
Controlling What: This beach picture from Casablanca conveys a sense of escape, adventure, and a
Idea desire for exploration. It evokes a feeling of freedom, happiness, and a longing for a tropical
gateway.
How: The picture helps convey the message by capturing the serene beauty of the beach in
Casablanca. The clear blue waters, the sandy shore, and people around create a visual
representation of relaxation and tranquility. The color, composition, and overall aesthetics of
the image work together to evoke emotions and transport the viewer to a peaceful beach
setting.

Section 2: Body Paragraph 1

a. Describe the main point for body paragraph #1 that helps you prove your controlling idea (visual element
+ message):
Point 1 A dog’s body + 3 horses + Two horse riders.

b. Identify the specific evidence from the visual text that supports the above point:
Described We can see the white body with sort of grey dots right in front of all components in the
Evidence 1 center of the image with its head hiding down the soil.
2 brown horses are passing to your right from left whereas we can see a head of the other
horse right beside the right side of the dog’s body with white hair in right corner.
We can see them riding the horse in the sun right above the horses passing to the right.

c. Explain how the specific evidence supports the above point:

 Explanation 1 The dog is clearly seen playing around the shore digging the sand for fun whereas on the
same hand we can see people riding the horses. It might be people learning to ride or it also
can be that they are there for economical basis like they offer people to ride it taking cash in
return. The two horse riders might be the owner or the worker for the horse or even they
might be practicing to ride horse.

Point 2 A man with the cycle + A family + A couple + Two old ladies

b. Identify the specific evidence from the visual text that supports the above point:
Described Exactly in the center a man is with his red cycle looking at the dog digging the sand.
Evidence 2 Just below the head of the horse on the right behind we can see a family I guess of 5 people
in which 3 are children and other 2 the adult.
Right behind the family we see the couple following the family talking to each other.
Right behind and in the left corner we can just see two women talking to each other.

Explanation 2 A man with a cycle enjoying the ride got distracted and is watching the dog playing and
digging the sand. Far in the shoreline we can see the family walking around talking whereas
the kids playing and goofing around. Right behind we can see the couple talking to each
other.

Point 3 The beach + The sky + The shore

Described Behind all these components we can see the water waves coming towards the shore.
Evidence 3 A blue sky filled with clouds has covered almost 3/4th part of the frame.

Explanation 3 The beach is adorned with golden sand, inviting people to take a leisurely stroll. The sky
above is a vast expanse of blue, dotted with fluffy white clouds, creating a serene and
picturesque backdrop. The shore gently meets the waves, creating a soothing melody as they
crash against the sand. It’s a beautiful scene that captures the essence of the beach in
Casablanca.
