PDF Pawn Endgame

Dear Champion, if you opened this file, it means you are in a Chess Mood
😊
After watching the course, it’s a good step to refresh your memories. You
will go through the content you learned step by step.

Sec. 1. Distant opposition: Advanced

When Kings are far from each other, remember the Distant opposition.
Sec. 2.Corresponding squares
Sometimes for every square of the opponent’s King, we have the
corresponding square.

The triangle idea allows you to give the move to the opponent.
Sec. 3. Pawn race
The idea is to promote as fast as possible.

Sometimes we can create better conditions for promotion, like inviting the
opponent’s King under the check.
Sec. 4. Multitasking King
When you are behind in the pawn race, the King can turn into a Hero trying
to stop the promotion or supporting your pawn.
Sec. 5. Shouldering
While making your ideas with the King, you can also block the opponent’s
King - it is called shouldering.
Sec. 6. 2 Pawns vs King
2 connected pawns easily win against the opponent’s King.

In the case of doubled pawns, it also wins.

The exception is when both pawns are very advanced.
Sec. 7. The rabbits and the hunter
It’s difficult for the King to catch several passed pawns.

2 things you need to remember:

1. Pawns are stronger when they are advanced.

2. And the further they are from each other, the better.
Sec. 8. 2 pawns vs 1

2 pawns vs 1 is usually a win.

The idea is - King to f6 and push the pawns.

Positions are concrete with protected passed pawns and here I will remind
you the drawish and winning positions we learned.

Sec. 9. Pythagoras rule
If the white pawn is in this triangle, the position is winning.

If we shift the white pawn behind, the triangle becomes smaller.

Sec. 10. 2 vs 2 same side
These positions are mainly drawish:

In some occasions, if the opponent has fixed bad pawns and the King is
active, there are some chances.
And in some exceptional positions, just King’s activity can be decisive.
Sec. 11. Connected passed pawns
If the pawns and Kings are equally advanced, it’s usually a draw.

In case of having more advanced pawns and King, there can be chances to
win.
Sec. 12. 3 vs 3 same side
In equal conditions, these positions are drawish:

If the King is very active, there could be some chances to win. It’s always
concrete and often depends on the opposition.
Sec. 13. Breakthrough
Breakthrough is the tactical part of the pawn endgame course.
By force, we try to clear up the way for the pawns and promote them.

If not available at the moment, you can prepare the breakthrough as well.

Conclusion

Dear Champion, if after going through the PDF you feel confident in your
knowledge and familiar with the positions, then you are good. Otherwise, I
would recommend revising the sections where you felt uncomfortable as
repetition is the key to strengthening any knowledge!

Good luck!
Yours,
GM Gabuzyan 😊
