ASSIGNMENT 6 (Observing a student): Discretely observe one student in your assigned classroom

during an extended period of direct instruction.

Detail what was going on in the environment, and what you observed the student doing while the lesson
was being given. Make sure to document ALL behavior in relationship to what was being presented by the
classroom teacher. Please describe the setting, the lesson that was given, if the student was on task and
engaged in the lesson, and what you uncovered about putting yourself in a lesson from the student’s point
of view. >>>

While Mrs. Williams is giving her lesson on the rug, this particular student is having a hard
time staying focused, keeps wondering his eyes around the classroom, and is fidgeting with
his surroundings. The lesson being given is picking the correct sound of the vowel, either
short or long, for the word on the board. His classmate just called on him to solve the problem
on the board, and he is having a hard time picking the correct answer. His classmates are
helping him and he sits back on the rug once he gets the answer right. He now seems a bit
more focused and is participating with selecting the correct sound of the vowel. Mrs. Williams
did not seem to observe his lack of attention at first, but once she noticed he was struggling
with his turn at the board, she started focusing more attention to this student to see if he is
paying attention and participating. I uncovered that after the student realized his lack of
attention put him in a position of not knowing the correct answer and not liking how that made
him feel, he made the choice to focus on the lesson and engage in the activity.
