ASSIGNMENT 6 (Observing a student): Discretely observe one student in your assigned classroom

during an extended period of direct instruction.

Detail what was going on in the environment, and what you observed the student doing while the lesson
was being given. Make sure to document ALL behavior in relationship to what was being presented by the
classroom teacher. Please describe the setting, the lesson that was given, if the student was on task and
engaged in the lesson, and what you uncovered about putting yourself in a lesson from the student’s point
of view. >>>

During the math lesson while the teacher is on the projector and students are working with her
to solve equations this student is standing and crawling on the floor going through all of his
desk papers and not paying attention to the lesson. When the teacher calls on him to answer
he does participate and answers correctly despite his lack of attention, but the teacher also
had to take time out of instruction to tell him to get his work out multiple times. By the time he
gets his work out he does look and watch the board briefly as the teacher and students go
over the rest of the word problems for math, but I could see him getting distracted very easily
by himself. I think from watching him he seems very bored with the work and doesn’t know
what to do with himself even when the teacher prompts him multiple times with instructions.
His attention span appears to be really short as he raises his hand to answer a question, he
gets distracted again seconds later. Once the class is instructed to finish the rest of the
assignment amongst themselves, he tries working along instead of with his group even
though his group looks to be trying to get him to work together. He works on one or two
problems with them but gets frustrated easily and distracted. He crumples his papers a lot and
his desk appeared to be very messy with lots of rumpled loose papers. During the assignment
when most groups have finished, he is playing with the number cubes instead of using them
to help him and his team finish and instead also tries distracting the rest of his group by
playing around. The teacher ended up having to go and help the group finished and yelled at
the group for slacking off and not focusing because she heard them messing around as the
other groups worked and finished.
