OVERVIEW
A variety of training material has been developed by HP technical marketing for the HP Universal
Print Driver (HP UPD).
This self-paced course is designed for service and support that use, install and manage the HP
Universal Print Driver (HP UPD).
The lessons cover HP UPD functionality, features, pre-configuration, install, print, and basic
knowledge necessary for troubleshooting.
HP AutoUpgradeUPD
YouTube URL: http://youtu.be/mYCVx1RBp9w
This video walks you through the process of upgrading the print driver using the HP
AutoUpgradeUPD executable from the command prompt on a PC with the Windows 7 32-bit
operating system. This same process can be used on all operating systems supported by the HP
UPD.
The HP AutoUpgradeUPD executable simplifies the process of creating clean print queues on a
print server. It can be used when:
This prevents existing queues from carrying forward unknown, incompatible and unstable
configurations during driver upgrades. It deletes the existing print queue and creates a new print
queue.
The following settings are retained when upgrading with the HP AutoUpgradeUPD executable:
All other settings on the new print queues will be set to factory defaults
For more information, see the readme included with the HP AutoUpgradeUPD executable.
The HP PARK is a collection of tools, scripts and documentation to help print administrators install,
deploy, configure and manage the HP Universal Print Driver.
Pre-configuring HP UPD using the HP DCU
YouTube URL: http://youtu.be/4jx1jBXrVUU
This video walks you through pre-configuring the HP Universal Print Driver (HP UPD) using the HP
Driver Configuration Utility (DCU) on a PC with the Windows 7 32-bit operating system. This same
process can be used on all operating systems supported by the HP UPD.
The HP Driver Configuration Utility (HP DCU) is a small Windows application used to edit the
configuration file associated with a particular driver. The configuration file controls the printer driver
settings and takes effect when the driver is installed.
HP DCU can be used in all of the same environments that the HP UPD supports. It does not handle
any part of the deployment or installation of the driver. The default configuration file is modified and
saved back to the same driver directory in which it was opened.
For more information, see the readme included with HP DCU or the HP System Administrator’s
Guide available at www.hp.com/go/upd.
NOTE: HP DCU is included with the HP Printer Administrator´s Resource Kit (HP PARK) and can
be downloaded www.hp.com/go/upd.
This video focuses on two components of the driver life cycle: Stage and Install. The video includes
the following steps:
Search for HP plug and play printer driver files in the Windows driver store and remove these
staged HP UPD printer driver files.
Package driver files and code needed to deploy the driver
Copy the packaged driver files to the W indows driver store
Using Plug and Play, install a USB connected printer.
Verify the correct driver is selected.
The example in the video uses a Windows 7 32-bit system. This same process can be used on all
operating systems supported by the HP UPD.
This video focuses on two HP PARK tools:
HP RemovePNPDrivers.exe
HP Driver Deployment Utility (HP DDU)
HP RemovePNPDrivers.exe
This executable searches for HP plug and play printer driver files in the Windows driver store and
provides an option to remove these staged printer driver files. Currently installed printers are not
affected by this executable.
NOTE: Only the default location for staged driver files on Windows (%SYSTEMROOT%\inf) will be
searched for driver files.
For more information, see the readme included with the HP RemovePNPDrivers executable and HP
DDU or the HP System Administrator’s Guide available at www.hp.com/go/upd.
The HP RemovePNPDrivers utility and DDU are included with the HP Printer Administrator´s
Resource Kit (HP PARK) and can be downloaded from www.hp.com/go/upd.
The videos show the new USB Plug and Play features of the HP UPD installer, including what the
selections do and an example using a Windows 7 32-bit system. This same process can be used
on all operating systems supported by the HP UPD.
Starting with UPD 5.6.5, new options in install.exe add the ability to select USB mode for USB Plug
and Play. Options enable you to do the following:
Remove all versions of HP Universal Printing Driver from Windows driver store
Add the HP Universal Printing Driver to Windows driver store
For more information, see the readme included with HP UPD or the HP System Administrator’s
Guide available at www.hp.com/go/upd.
