Earthquakes
Earthquakes are caused by the movement of giant pieces of rock
beneath the Earth’s surface. These pieces are called tectonic plates, and
a b c d they are always moving and shifting. Sometimes, the plates can get stuck
and pressure builds up. The area where the plates get stuck is called a fault
line.
Earthquakes can happen anywhere in the world, but they are most
common along fault lines. Fault lines can be hundreds of kilometres long
and can extend deep into the Earth’s crust. Earthquakes can occur under the
e f g h ocean.
