RESUME CRITIQUE PREPARED FOR Ganeshan K

Hello Mr. Ganeshan,

I've reviewed your resume and have some suggestions, ideas, and thoughts I think will help make your Resume
more effective.

F A note before I begin:

Please don't take anything I might say about your resume personally.
It's my job to tell you how to turn those words into a document that showcases your skills, abilities, and talents
so that you can land the position you want. Also keep in mind that resume writing is not an exact science.

That doesn’t mean my approach is the only correct way to prepare a resume but only that this approach and p
xhilosophy has worked for clients in the past.

I have one basic Mantra to write a resume. Don’t just work on your Past and Present. Work towards
highlighting what you can do in future to be a beneficial employee to the organization you are aspiring to join.

RESUME CRITIQUE

FORMAT, CONTENT, FOCUS AND PRESENTATION

You have marketable experience and background but your document needs attention in the areas of content,
format, focus, structure, and presentation in order to present that experience effectively.
I’d also like to see more emphasis on quantified accomplishments. I’ll address all of those issues in
this critique. As we discussed, this critique is focused on designing a resume suitable for positions of
Business Strategy/ Development lead role
The key, as you will see, is to keep that focus prominent in your document. When including anything in your
resume, always think in terms of, “How can I present this piece of information so that it relates either directly
or indirectly to
business understanding and taking it from X to Y level.

PRESENTATION
1. I recommend reworking your formatting to accommodate a compact font size (preferably Franklin Gothic
medium, Calibri, or Palatino Linotype).
2. Visually, your resume looks a little ordinary. You want your document to be conservative in appearance
but making some judicious use of varying font sizes, tabs, bold face, etc. can bring your document alive and
make it more inviting to read.
3. A resume is a formal document so I recommend justifying your right margin.

FONT CHOICE
4. You've primarily chosen Calibiri but there are multiple Fonts used in the draft.
5. Calibiri is the font I prefer to use for this kind of Resumes I write because I feel it presents less of a problem
for the applicant tracking systems used by some companies. Tahoma and Palatino are good choices. As I
mentioned earlier, you might try adjusting your format so you can make it more compact and improve
readability.

GRAMMAR, MECHANICS AND STRUCTURE

6. The way in which you have drafted your resume is too content specific and is taking lots of space. You can
give new dimensions to profile to make it more effective and consultant specific. Use some other fonts or
try middle alignment to make it visibly more attractive. The future job aspiration is not coming out
anywhere. It’s like adding too much content without having clear thought process.
7. You need to showcase your competencies in a more effective manner. Try to avoid very general points
and incorporate such points which are very much related to your job profile.
8. Notable achievements/Key accomplishments can be highlighted separately or along with the profile
section. Don’t put borders and unnecessary highlights in the resume. You can present your work profile in
a different way.
9. All of the statements describing the duties and responsibilities for your current position should be written
in the present tense. Only your accomplishments in this position should be in the past tense.
10. All of the statements for your previous positions should be written in the past tense.
11. Your document has a number of mistakes with capitalization so look it over carefully. Remember the only
words that should be capitalized are the first words in a sentence, proper names, titles, and acronyms.
12. You are an experienced person; it is of utmost importance to mention the job details very carefully.
RESUME SECTIONS
 Are all resume sections clearly labeled? All organizations are clearly labeled in your resume but your key
accomplishments are not highlighted well. What difference you made to an organization is not coming
out well in the draft.

 Are sections placed in the best order to highlight your strongest credentials? I don’t think so. You have
no- where displayed why someone should select you over the other profiles. Your core skill set and
expertise which is your unique signature strengths should be highlighted very clearly.

 Is your work history listed in reverse chronological order (most recent job first)? This is matching in your
resume. So no changes required in this area.

CAREER GOAL
 Is the resume targeted to a specific career goal, as opposed to a one-size-fits-all document?

 I don’t see anywhere what you are looking forward to. You have written in plain English what you do but
no-where it highlights what you are best at and what add on you bring on table for next organization you
aspire to join. Include that in Summary

 If this is a resume for a career change, does it include supporting details that show how your past
experience is relevant to the new job?

 This content is missing in your resume

WORK EXPERIENCE
In your work experience section, you’ve listed everything with bullets.
13. I prefer to start off each position entry with very short paragraph (1 or 2 sentences) describing the
company, followed by a bulleted list of responsibilities, and ending with a bulleted list of quantified
accomplishments.
14. You can mention your Professional Experience like this.
Name of the company  Designation  Duration (In a single line)
Job responsibilities (In this way also you can mention your job profiles)
15. Your job description should always start with action verbs and the language be precise and the sentences
simple and easy to understand

Job Description has 2 components: 1) duties, and 2) accomplishments.

In your current set-up, your accomplishments don’t stand out at all.

Of the 2 components, the accomplishments are, by far, the most important. These are the aspects of your
background that will make you stand out from your competition.

By accomplishments, I mean anything you’ve done for your employers that has:
1. Gone "above and beyond" the call of duty: Have you delivered superior performance on a special project or
had sustained performance over a period of time?
2. Improved customer service or satisfaction: What have you done to improve the way outsiders perceive the
company and its products and services?
3. Improved operations and made things run more smoothly: Have you changed office operations, improved
employee morale and retention, or increased productivity?
