How to Use This Book 8
Kanji for First Names 17
Kanji for Last Names (and additional first names) 169
Bibliography 196
Preface
When going to a foreign land, whether for work or for play, it is common
sense that the better able you are to adapt to local ways, the more
successful your trip will be. One way in which the traveller might adapt
to the ways of another country is by changing his or her name to fit local
custom. For example, when in Rome, a wise American by the name of
Charles may call himself Carlos; a smart English lady named Juliet might
call herself Giulietta.
This book is intended to help you easily determine the most suitable
way of rendering your name into Japanese. Even though an English name
might not have an equivalent Japanese name, Write Your Name in Kanji
will help you understand what goes into selecting a name, and will present
a number of choices so that you can pick the most appropriate characters
to represent your own name in Japanese. In doing so, this book may
even help give you a better understanding of your own original, English
name.
As you will see, you may consider several different Japanese equivalents
for your name and select the one most appropriate to your tastes and
character. If you are not satisfied with the meaning carried by your
original English name, chances are that you can find a name
6
approximating it phonetically but containing a fabulous meaning that
your English name lacks. You may decide to use one of the "attention-
getting transcriptions" to amuse your friends or deliver such an
unforgettable first impression that new business associates will never
forget you. If you stick to the original meaning of your English name,
you may also find a corresponding one in fascinating kanji. If you prefer
a simple phonetic transcription, you can simply elect to render your name
in its katakana or hiragana equivalent.
Even if your name happens to be one of those that occurs rarely (or
never) in English, with the result that there is no entry for it in this book,
you needn't despair! You can render your name phonetically, making
use of the katakana, hiragana, or even kanji provided in the charts
provided for this purpose.
Once you've selected a name that appeals to you, you might even have it
engraved into a hanko (a'seal or stamp always required in lieu of a
handwritten signature for official or business-related documents) and
officially register it with your city hall. They, in turn, will issue a
certificate legitimizing your seal, and the characters it bears, as legally
valid and binding on any official document to which you affix it.
The author sincerely hopes that this book will help you and your friends
to succeed in "doing in Japan as the Japanese do," and contribute to your
building happy relationships with your Japanese friends.
For their valuable ideas the author wishes to thank Messrs. Yoshie
Shimizu and Yoshio Ogasawara. The author especially wishes to thank
the editor Mr. David Friedman for his professional advice and full
cooperation.

How To Use This Book
Understanding Japanese writing
Before getting started, we should note a few points about the Japanese
language. First, there's the phonetic system: for the purpose of simplicity,
this book uses the following letters to represent the following sounds:
a as in “father”
e as in “egg”
i as in the “ee” sound in “feet”
o as in “boat”
u as in “prune”
8
script based on kanji, hiragana, appeared, followed shortly by katagana.
The roles and forms of kanji and kana have changed throughout the
centuries. In contemporary times, kanji are almost always used for their
meanings exclusively (with rare exceptions, called ateji, still occuring
here and there). Hiragana are primarily used for words whose kanji are
excessively difficult and obscure, as endings for some kanji-based words,
and for particles. Katakana are used mainly for foreign words and to
emphasize native words, serving a role similar to that played by italics
in English.
History of transcription
This book hardly represents the first attempt to render foreign words
into kanji. Especially in the latter half of the nineteenth century, as Japan
awakened from her long, isolated slumber and started to have contact
with the outside world, the problem of how to write foreign words (such
as country names) arose. At first, Japanese adhered to the old tradition
of writing words with kanji chosen for their pronunciations, rather than
their meanings. Some examples of transcriptions from that era include:
At the same time, there was a growing trend toward using katakana to
represent foreign words, such as names and the techinical terms that
started flooding into Japan when she opened herself to the West and its
technology. Finally, in 1902, the Ministry of Education issued a list of
standardized katakana renditions of Western personal and place names
(for East Asian ones, the original kanji were simply retained). Since
then, it has been regarded as proper to use katakana to represent non-
Japanese words and names. Kanji still surfaces occasionally, though,
especially as abbreviations for country names in newspaper headlines.
9
What's in a name?
English names are not just random and meaningless collections of sounds.
Virtually all "conventional" names do, or at least did, have very clear
meanings when they were first concocted. Many English names are rooted
in old Hebrew words used in the Bible, terms from old West European
languages, or words from ancient Greek and Latin. For instance, let's
look at the following examples:
10
The key to successfully rendering an English name into Japanese script
is deciding what we want to achieve. For instance, many people will
want kanji that retain both the pronunciation and the original meaning
of their names. Others may not care so much about meaning, so long as
the pronunciation is retained. Different people will want different things
out of their kanji. Along these lines, for each of the English names
included in this book, up to six categories of transcriptions are provided.
11
Purely denotative transcription: This method is the opposite of the one
previously described. Disregarding pronunciation, this way of
transcription focuses solely on preserving the meaning of the original
English name. To be able to do a denotative rendering, it is necessary to
know the original meaning of the English name; those meanings appear
in this book for that purpose.
Example: Edward (from the Old English for "rich guardian") could be
transcribed thus: m , meaning "rich guardian," and
pronounced fuyu hogosha.
12
meanings, they tend to be comical or even negative. They are calculated
to attract people's attention and to make sharp impressions on business
clients and partners and may therefore be especially suitable for foreign
businessmen in Japan for whom it is critical to make an indelible first
impression.
Example: Hillary (from the Latin for cheerful) can be written as ISlIM
H , or "a tired sick mule in the village."
A final category of transcription appears, as well. Occasionally, I have
added what I call "brainteasers." A brainteaser is phonetically faithful to
the original English name, but offers a kind of puzzle that may pique
people's interest and provoke them to ask you why it represents the
original English name. The humor and creativity of the brainteaser's
connection to the English name is sure to indelibly print your name into
the memories of your friends and business associates.
A few final thoughts on transcription, and the kanji used in this book. As
some readers may know, the Ministry of Education currently has a list
of 1,945 characters (iH-/’-, joyo kanji, or "common-use characters")
"recommended” for use in government documents, education, publishing,
etc. Ideally, according to the Ministry, no written communication should
go out of the bounds represented by these kanji. Even so, people often
eschew this rule as restrictive, people often go out of the boundaries
anyway, using many kanji in their everyday lives that do not appear on
the standard list.
13
that best fit certain names. This is not, in fact, unusual, as Japanese
themselves often have names whose characters are outside the pale of
joyo kanji and are unreadable even to other Japanese.
It is important that you keep this in mind, for even as your Japanized
name will delight most of your friends, it will also disturb a few, who
will claim that they have never seen the characters before and may even
disparage it for its unconventionality. Yet, should this happen, it is they
who are being blinded to their own cultural heritage by narrow¬
mindedness. Rendering names into kanji on the basis of pronunciation
alone, and/or into obscure characters is, after all, an important part of
Japanese orthographic culture, as we have seen.

Last Names (and additional first names)
Perhaps by now, you have selected an exciting kanji combination for
your personal name, but wish you could transcribe your surname, as
well. Or maybe you have a rare or exotic personal name that the first
part of this book failed to cover. This section of the book is for people
who wish to render their family names into Japanese, and also for
those people whose first names did not appear in the first section of
the book.
The sounds in the table beginning on page 175 are phonetic building
blocks which you can put together to create an appropriate kanji
combination for either of your names. The fact that there are some
important but simple differences between the phonetic systems of
English and Japanese, though, means it is necessary to understand a
few basic rules about Japanese sounds before getting started.
171
shi approximates “si,” as in “sin” and “she,” as in “sheet.”
tsu approximates “too,”as in “tooth.”
u approximates “w.”
z approximates “th,” as in “they.”
“b” becomes bu
“d” becomes do
“ch”becomes chi
“f” becomes fu
“g” becomes gu
“h” becomes fu
“j” becomes ji
“k” becomes ku
“1” becomes ru
172
m” becomes mu
p” becomes pu
;r” becomes ru
;s” becomes su
'sh’ ’becomes shi
t” becomes to
ts” becomes tsu
V’ becomes bu
z” becomes zu
The exception to this rule is the English “n” sound. In Japanese, there
is an independent n, but it appears only as the final sound in a syllable—
never at the beginning. There are, therefore, no kanji that have just an
n sound (n can only be written with kana). This book addresses that
problem by providing kanji for syllables ending in n: for instance, kan,
kin, ken, kun, and kon.
Let’s look at a few examples and see where all this gets us:
173
Once you’ve worked out the Japanization of your name, selecting the
kanji for it is easy. For instance, for Bob, you’d simply select a kanji
for bo and one for bu. For Munson, you’d pick kanji for mu, un, and
son. For Herbert, you would use the characters for ha, a, ba, a, and to.
By following these simple rules, you, too, should be able to write your
own name in kanji easily, whether your name be Elijah Muhammed, or
Siobhan O’Connell.

Write Your Name in Japanese Kanji offers a fun and simple way to write
your first name using Japanese characters. Because it is possible for many
different kanji to have the same sound, each name can have a variety
of possible kanji combinations—all with different meanings, from the
beautiful to the bizarre. In addition, an extensive appendix makes it
possible to select kanji for last names, and for first names which are not
covered by the book. Having selected appropriate kanji, the reader might
even decide to create his or her own hanko—a name seal that Japanese
use on documents in lieu of signatures—like the samples for each name
included in the book.
The first book that makes it possible to add a bit of the mystery of the
Orient to English names, Write Your Name in Japanese Kanji brings H
and West together in a fun way. This unique volume is perfectly suite<B
the bookshelf not only of the fluent reader of Japanese, but the noKiJ
Japan hand, as well.
