Content
Verbs of Action describe actions that someone or something does.
Billy plays basketball on Saturdays.
The verb ‘plays’ is a verb of action.
Verbs of Being describe a state or a condition.
Billy is in Grade Five. He feels very nervous.
The verbs is and feels are Verbs of Being.
Helping Verbs/ Auxiliary Verbs help the main verb to describe the
action
Billy is writing very quickly. He has finished his work.
The helping verbs is and has are used to help the main verbs writing and
finished.
Lesson on Being and Helping Verbs (2 lessons)

Content: Verbs of Being
Being verbs express a state of being- am is are was were be been being
are the 8 Being verbs
The girl is sad. ‘is’ is the being verb,
Jamie was curious. ‘was’ is the being verb
Practice: Identify the verbs in the passage and say whether they
are action / being verbs.
Lateah is a girl. She eats lunch at school with her
friends. Lateah and Athalia were playing netball in the yard. They
ran over to Kimmya. Kimmya was in the classroom. She wrote
her Science notes from the board.
During lunch, Samson and Kenson jumped over the shallow
river. Samson fell into the river and Kenson laughed at him. The
boys were in trouble. The principal, Mrs. Jones punished them.
The school bell rang at 3 o'clock. The students left the school
and walked to the bus stop. I am on my way home too. The day
was very good.
Content: Helping Verbs
A Helping Verb is a verb that comes before the main verb and adds to its
meaning.
The man had jumped over the gate. had (helping verb) jumped (main
verb)
There are 23 helping verbs: am is are was were be been being have has
had can could do does did may might must shall should will would
Read the passage and identify the Helping/Auxiliary Verbs and the Main
Verbs.
Sports Day
Sports day is exciting at Kingstown Government School. The athletes
have prepared themselves for this event. They are dressed in their
house colours, red, blue, yellow and green. The teachers are excited as
well. Everyone will meet at the Victoria Park.
The students will march across the field in their houses. The Principal,
Mrs. Jones has prepared a speech for the event. The parents can support
their children too. They can sit away from the students.
The Police band has begun playing the March songs. The athletes and
cheerleaders will lead the march. I had been an athlete several times.
The winners will receive medals and trophies.
Read each sentence carefully. Circle the Main verb and underline
the Helping Verb. Write if the action is in the past, present or the future.

Lesson on the Infinitive Verb
Objectives: Students will be able to
1. explain is an infinitive

Content
The Infinitive form of the verb is the verb in its basic form. It is the
version of the verbs which will appear in your dictionary. The infinitive
form of the verb is usually preceded by ‘to’ (e.g. to run, to drive, to
think). The infinitive form of the verb is used to further explain what
someone is doing or wants to do.
Examples of the Infinitive are:
To sing to eat to exercise to jump to play
To buy to speak to run to read to sell
To drink to love to celebrate to receive to discuss
Lesson on Subject and Verb Agreement – Simple Present Tense

Objectives: Students will be able to

Content
The Simple Present Tense is used for facts and for things that happen
regularly.
The girls love cricket. (fact)
The students play cricket during the lunch break. (regular action).
Verbs must agree with their subjects. If the subject is singular(one
person, animal or thing) we use a singular verb.
Roslyn bowls the ball.
If the subject is plural, we use a plural verb,
We play cricket after school.
Subject and Verb Agreement. Correctly make sentences using the table.

Tim to the park.
The students walks by the building.
My pet dog walk over to the shop.
Some people in the yard.
Lesson on Simple Present Tense
Objectives: Students will be able to
1. write the correct form of the verb for verbs ending ch, sh, x
2. add es to form the singular verb
Content
Verbs ending with ch, sh, tch and x, need ‘es’ to form the singular in the
Simple Present Tense.
He brushes He catches He mixes
The Verbs go and do also add es.
He goes He does
We use Singular Verbs with everybody and nobody, everyone and no
one, somebody, each and every.
Nobody wants to miss the match.
Everyone knows the time.
No one goes to that shop.
Each student does the work.
Every boy gets a gift.
Write the correct form of the verb.

Read the paragraphs and identify the subjects and the verbs.
Alyssa eats lunch with her friends. They sit around the table every
day. Someone says a prayer before they start. Mrs. Douglas joins
them at times. Krista and Athalia enjoy themselves.
Kellis and Juliana play netball in the yard. Everybody comes to
look at them. Mr. Wyllie cheers on the girls. Nobody wants them
to lose the game. The students jump for joy when they win.
The butterflies go from flower to flower. My friend catches them
all the time. One red butterfly flies through my window. Each has a
unique colour and pattern. Everyone feels happy to see butterflies.
Lesson on Simple Present Tense Collective Nouns, Questions and
Negatives.
Objectives: Students will be able to
1. use singular verbs with collective nouns
2. use the helping verbs do/does and the root form of the main verb to
form questions
3. use do/does to form the negative of the simple present tense
Summary of Content
We use singular verbs with collective nouns.
The cricket team practices after school.
The choir is learning new songs.
The crowd shouts loudly.
We use the helping verbs do/does and the root form of the main verb to
form questions in the simple present tense.
Does Kenson like sports? Does (helping verb) (main verb)
Do you play football? Do (helping verb) play (main verb)
We also use do/does to form the negative of the simple present tense.
She does not want to stop playing basketball. Does (helping verb) want
(main verb)
They do not cook on Saturdays. Do (helping verb) cook (main verb)
