CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

INTRODUCTION

This chapter describes the research design, research locale, research respondents, research
instruments, data gathering procedure and statistical standards.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The researcher adopted descriptive correlational type. It aims to explore the perception of
students regarding Information Literacy and the Availability of Information Resources during
the research. Therefore, these areas will provide valuable insights to enhance students learning
and improved Information Literacy Programs.

RESEARCH LOCALE

The researcher conducted the study at Saint Michael College of Caraga, located at Brgy 4,
Atupan Street, Nasipit, Agusan Del Norte.

Saint Michael College of Caraga is a Roman Catholic School in Nasipit. In 1948 Nasipit was
still part of the parish of Buenavista whose Parish Priest was the late Fr. Martin Westeinde, a
Dutch MSC. It started it’s operation on July 1,1948 with Fr. Francisco Van Dyke as the First
Director. He was succeeded by Fr. Enrique Van Ma-anen, Fr. Vicente Portillo, Fr. Mateo Van
Santvoord and Fr. Anthony Krol in the order of succession. In February 16, 2002, the name Saint
Michael Institute was replaced with Saint Michael College of Caraga as suggested by Mrs.
Vanica P. Del Rosario during the 1st SMI General Assembly. The name was duly approved by the
Securities and Exchange Commission.

RESEARCH RESPONDENTS

The respondents of the study were the Senior High School and 3 rd year college students
undergoing research writing of Saint Michael College of Caraga for the academic year 2022-
2023.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The researcher adopted the survey questionnaire of Olatokunbo Christopher Okiki B.A.
(Philosophy), MIS, Ibadan entitled Information Literacy Skills and Availability of Information
Resources as Factors Influencing Research Productivity of Academic Staff of Federal Universities
in Nigeria. Also, the researcher asked permission from Olatokunbo Christopher Okiki the author
of the said study.

ETHICAL STANDARDS

The data and responses from the students are secure in this study, maintained confidential,
and used only for this purpose. Respect for the academic environment includes adhering to the
policies and guidelines of the academic institution as well as any relevant academic standards of
conduct. It also involves getting written consent from the students to participate in the study as
well as ensuring that the findings accurately reflect their perceptions and experiences. It
involves encouraging the students to develop their information literacy skills through the
research process. Finally, students research while preserving the integrity and confidentiality of
the data collected.
DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

To get the entire population, the researcher wrote a permission letter to the
registrar's office. The researcher asked first to sign the letter to the dean of the College
of Computing and Information Sciences Office. Then the Registrar Office provided the
list that the researcher requested. The researcher obtained a population of 296 with 134
males and 162 female respondents. Before collecting the data, the researcher asks
permission and secures a formal letter of authorization for the Grade 12 and 3rd year
college students. Lastly, the researchers gathered, totaled, assessed, and examined the
