“GRADE 11- STEM STUDENTS EXPERIENCE FROM

LONG DISTANCED HOME LOCATION TOWARDS TO

ITS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AT OCCIDENTAL
MINDORO STATE COLLEGE-LABANGAN CAMPUS”
CHAPTER I
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
INTRODUCTION
According to Spies, Mattias (2006), Long-distance commuting is widely applied
and has social, political and economic consequences for the employees and their
families, companies and communities. There is, however, surprisingly little concrete
research done attempting to unravel the underlying structures and patterns of
interrelated factors. Storey (2011) argues that studies on long-distance commuting
involve too many assumptions and hypotheses, but too few supporting (or rejecting)
proofs based on primary field research. One frequently presented assumption is a
generally high job satisfaction among long-distance commuters, usually explained with
financial incentives and abundant free time (for example Houghton 2003; Tykkyläinen
2003). This article attempts to unravel the influence of one very particular and
inherently geographical aspect of long-distance commuting affecting the academic
performance of many students: distance.
For over four decades, series of studies have suggested the importance of

school as social environment of learning. Some of these studies examined

locational planning and their attendant consequences on achievement of

students in various states of the Federation. The studies were intended to

assist education authorities of various states to decide where a particular

type of school should be located; the size of a school in each location;

whether a new school should be built or otherwise among others

(Mbakwe, 2006).
Alokan (2010) found out that students’ problems are strongly associated with
poor performance and that sex and location do not affect the negative relationship
between student problems and academic performance. In another development,
Considine and Zappala (2002) studied students in Australia and found out that
geographical location does not significantly predict outcomes in school performance.
Shield and Dockrell (2008) while looking at the effects of classroom and
environmental noise on children’s academic performance found out that both cronic
and acute exposure to environmental and classroom noise have a detrimental effect
upon children’s learning and performance. In view of these inconclusive findings, it
necessary to carry out further research to confirm or annul the otherwise protracted
issue on the effect of interaction of location on academic achievement of Secondary
Schools students with particular reference to Ekiti State Nigeria.
The population of commuters on college campuses continues to increase.
According to a study called Time is the Enemy, only 25% of college students
attend full-time and live on-campus. Three-quarters of U.S. college students,
according to this report, have to juggle work, families and school and also
commute to classes. Further, this report indicates that only a quarter of the
students who attend part-time ultimately complete college, and students who are
poor and/or students of color face additional barriers to completing their college
educations. Bozic (2008) confirmed these results in his analysis of factors
influencing the ability of students to complete their degree programs. Schools that
have not been known for actively enrolling a significant amount of non-
residential students are now recognizing that, whether they sought them out or not,
the population of commuter students has increased at their universities and
colleges.
Statement of the Study

1. What is the demographic profile of the grade 11 STEM students in terms

of:
a. Name
b. Age
c. Sex

2. What did the students do to deal experiencing a long distance home

location towards to their academic performance?
3. How are the students affected by experiencing a long distance home
location towards to the academic performance?

4. What suggestions could you give that will be a great help for the
students not to experiencing a long distance home location towards to
their academic performance?
OBJECTIVES
This study is entitled “GRADE 11- STEM STUDENTS EXPERIENCE FROM
LONG DISTANCED HOME LOCATION TOWARDS TO ITS ACADEMIC
PERFORMANCE AT OCCIDENTAL MINDORO STATE COLLEGE-LABANGAN
CAMPUS” will look to answer the following questions.

These are the following objectives of the study:

1.to determine the demographic profile of the grade 11 STEM students in
terms of:
a. Name
b. Age
c. Sex
2. to deal with the student’s way on how they experience from a Long
Distance Home Location towards to their Academic Performance.

3. to investigate if Grade 11 STEM students were affected by

experiencing from Long Distance Home Location toward to their
Academic Performance.

4. to formulate suggestions that will be a great help for the students not
to experience having a long distance home location towards to their
academic performance.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study aims to determine the experience of having a long

distance home location towards the academic performance of grade 11
STEM students of Occidental Mindoro State College-Labangan campus.
In this study, students will realize that the distance is not a hindrance in
achieving a good academic performance.
SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

This study is limited for grade 11 STEM students of Occidental

Mindoro State College-Labangan Campus and experiencing a long
distance home location towards to their academic performance. In
addition, the gathered data relies only on the response of the grade 11
STEM students.

CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter will explain the research methodology that will use
in the study. Among the topics included in the discussion are the
research locale, research design, respondents of the study,
determination of the sample, research instrument, data gathering
procedure and the statistical treatment of data.
RESEARCH DESIGN

This study aims to determine the experience of having a long

distance home location towards the academic performance of the
students at Occidental Mindoro State College- Labangan Campus
through the use of quantitative method.
RESEARCH LOCALE
This study will be conducted at the Senior High School Department
of Occidental Mindoro State College- Labangan Campus. The focus of
this study will be the grade eleven (11) STEM students of OMSC
Labangan Campus which has a total of one hundred twenty (120)
respondents.

RESPONDENT OF THE STUDY

The researcher will conduct a survey on the senior high school

grade eleven (11) STEM students inside the Occidental Mindoro State
College- Labangan Campus.

The researcher will use one hundred twenty (120) grade eleven (11)
STEM students from Occidental Mindoro State College- Labangan
Campus, San Jose Occidental Mindoro. This study was valid for those
who are officially enrolled at OMSC- Labangan Campus on academic
year 2017-2018.
STATISTICAL TOOL

For clarifying and understanding of data gathered the following

statistical measures will be used in order to answer the questions post in
the study.
1. Percentage. It will be used to describe the responses of the variable
in determining the profile of the participants or respondents in the
entire population.
Formula:
P= f/N x 100
Where:
P= Percentage
f= Frequency
N= total number of respondents
2. Ranking. It will be used to determine the order of decreasing or increasing
magnitude of variables. The largest frequency will be ranked 1, the secsssond 2,
and so on down the rank.
3. Weighted Mean. It will be used to find out the overall average of responses
of the study by the respondents.
Formula:
Weighted mean = ∑wx/∑w
Where: ∑ is the sum of all scores
w is the weights
x is the value
X= Weighted Mean
RESEARCH INSTRUMENT
The researcher will be using the random sampling technique
because all of the grade eleven (11) STEM students from Occidental
Mindoro State College will be the respondents of this study. The
researchers chose the participants because they are suitable and capable
for the study.

The researchers will use questionnaires for the gathering in

determining the academic performance of the students experiencing long
distanced home location. Questionnaires will be based on theories and
literature used in study. The questionnaire is in the form of scale.
DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE
To guarantee the reliability and validity of the instrument used by the
study, the researcher confidentially request permit to the principal of
Occidental Mindoro State College- Labangan Campus. After fortifying
the permit from the respective principal of Occidental Mindoro State
College-Labangan Campus, researcher exclusively distributes the survey
questionnaire among the population of one hundred twenty (120)
students.

After the distribution of the questionnaire to the selected senior high

school students of Occidental Mindoro State College-Labangan Campus
the result was analyzed and it was followed by an interpretation to led the
conclusion, findings and recommendations.
