Research Methodology

This chapter discusses the research design, research methods, research

locale and time of the study, population and samples of the study, research

instrument, validation, administration and statistical methods used to analyze the data

and the question posed in the study.

Research Methods

Research Design

This study was considered a descriptive survey research which involves asking

the same set of questions (often prepared in the form of a written questionnaire or

ability test) of a large number of individual either by mail or in person.

The study was both used the qualitative and quantitative method of research in

analyzing the data. The qualitative methodology allows researchers to observe,

listen, and capture the feelings, perceptions, and attitudes of students in their natural

setting. Obtaining the perceptions of real people in real settings can assist

researchers in understanding the meaning behind actions and behaviors. The

quantitative research method will help to include that the data gathered are can be

quantified or measured; the findings are validated through statistical analysis; the

goal is to be objective; numbers are utilized to assess the information presented;

variables are utilized to represent problems; and results of quantitative analysis are

more easily compared and generalized.

Sampling Design

The selection of the participants was based on the following criteria:

1. Students who are enrolled in the first semester SY 2022-2023 in Odiongan

National High School.

2. Students who took the Humanities and Social Sciences strand under the

Academic track.

3. Students who participated during the three days of in-person classes and two

days distance learning — from August 22 until October 31 until the implementation of

five days of in-person classes from November 2 onward.

This research study entitled “Three-Day Classes and Its Advantages in the

Academic Performance as Perceived by Grade 12 HUMSS” was an experimental

research under both qualitative and quantitative research. This study focuses on the

effectiveness of the three-day classes to student performance/achievement.The

study has fifty (50) respondents which composed of 10 students from five selected

blocks and were picked by simple random sampling technique.

Population and Samples of the Study

The researchers’ respondents in this study were the Grade 12 HUMSS

students who participated in the three-day classes schedule and are officially

enrolled during the first semester of the school year 2022–2023 implemented by

Odiongan National High School. The researcher will select only fifty (50)

respondents that will answer the questionnaires given by the researchers.

Research Instruments and Material Use

The instruments and material that was used in this research study three-day

classes and it’s advantages in the academic performance as perceived by Grade 12

HUMSS are the following: questionnaires, pen, notepad, cellphone, and laptop. The

questionnaire was based from the evaluation of respondents using a four-point Likert

scale.

The Likert scale is used to measure the attitudes, opinions, and perceptions of

a person or group of people about social phenomena (Sugiyono, 2019). The Likert

scale on student academic performance has four answer options including;

4- Strongly Agree (SA)

3- Agree (A)

2- Disagree (D)

1- Strongly Disagree (SD)

2-

Data Collection and Source of Data

Data collection was carried out by completing questionnaires and interviews

conducted to students. The questionnaire contains statements regarding the

advantages of three-day classes on the academic performances of Grade 12

HUMSS students distributed in person. The interview was in the form of a guide to

examine the student’s perception and opinion about their experiences during the

three-day class schedule.

Validation of the Instrument

Validators were given samples of the instruments for comments and further

revisions. The instruments validated by experts will guarantee that the instruments

would produce the needed data from the respondents.

Administration of the Instrument.

The questionnaire was distributed to the selected Grade twelve (12) HUMSS

students in Odiongan National High School. The gathering of data was done after

securing the consent of the management of the said school.

Research Locale and Time of the Study

This study was conducted among selected Grade twelve (12) HUMSS students

who are officially enrolled during the first semester academic year 2022-2023 in

Odiongan National High School, Dapawan, Odiongan, Romblon .

Method of Data Analysis

Primary and secondary sources of data were considered in data analysis. First, a

thorough literature review was conducted. Survey was administered to the identified

respondents using the validated instruments. Documents such as test scores and

periodical examinations were considered for data gathering. Data were encoded

using Microsoft Excel. Statistical treatment was used to measure data, frequency

count and percentage which were used for analysis. A test for association was done

to understand the relationship of the variables between the student’s academic

performance towards the three-day classes schedule. Pearson r correlation was

used to test the relationships of the variables with software application of Statistical

Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The data file will be analyzed using

Descriptive Statistics like frequency count, percentage, mean, and standard

deviation in describing the sample.

The ratings given by the panel evaluators will be encode, process, and analyze.

The following statistical measures will be used in analyzing the data.

Descriptive Statistics. It will be used to determine the percentage, frequency

count and mean of the respondents.

Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). It will be used to determine the significant

difference between the three-day classes as to academic performance.

Ethical Procedures

Researchers must respect and protect the rights of the participants involved in

research studies (Creswell, 2007). All policies and procedures outlined by the school

were followed. Permission was requested from the principal at the research site to

conduct the study in the high school. Since the research took place at the
researcher’s school of employment, there are further approval or documentation was

needed to conduct the study.

Data is available to the school through electronic means and permission was

obtained by the school’s administration. Also, the identities of individual students are

not publicized, and no additional measures are needed or taken to protect the rights

and identities of participants. However, the administration of the school of focus is

aware of the research and look forward to an examination of the final data analysis.

The principal has provided a letter confirming and acknowledging the school’s

intention to examine the final research data. This data may lead to an identification of

the aspects of the three-day classes that provides increased student achievement

and may provide recommendations whether three-day class schedule is effective for

optimum student achievement (Pendley, D., Personal Communication, November

29, 2016).
