Procedure of Making Membrane Electrode Assemblies (MEA)

The Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) is the core component of a fuel cell that helps produce the

electrochemical reaction needed to separate electrons. On the anode side of the MEA, a fuel (hydrogen,

methanol etc.) diffuses through the membrane and is met on the cathode end by an oxidant (oxygen or

air) which bonds with the fuel and receives the electrons that were separated from the fuel. Catalysts on

each side enable reactions and the membrane allows protons to pass through while keeping the gases

separate. In this way cell potential is maintained and current is drawn from the cell producing electricity.

Tools and Material:

1. Carbon paper

2. CCM Paper (?)

3. Polymer
4. Paper with printed pattern

5. Glue

6. Cutter

7. Paper Tape
8. Cutting Mate

9. Press Hit Machine

Step:

1. Cut the catalyst coated membrane (CCM) as the pattern that already made before. Then mark

one side as cathode (ca).

2. Cut the polymer as the pattern that already made before.

3. Cut the carbon paper as the pattern that already made before.

4. Rub the edge of carbon paper that already cut to remove catalyst on carbon. This step to make

easy when stick the carbon paper to polymer.

5. Stick the carbon paper to polymer using glue. Spread the glue to edge of carbon paper (rubed

area), then stick it to polymer.

6. Streghten the bond by using hit press machine. Set the temperature at 25 oC and it takes one

minute. When pressing it, should make sure the pack is open.

7. Stick the carbon to CCM on its two side by using glue, so CCM lies between carbon.

8. Then strengthen again in the same way as before. Using press hit machine with set temperature
at 25oC and takes one minute.
