On November 1st 1928 was broadcast the first programme of the Radio - Telephonic Broadcasting Society, as was
denominated the public radio Broadcasting Service on its official creation deed. Before 1928 there was an important
pro-radio movement whose main protagonist was professor Dragomir Hurmuzescu, the one who became the first
president of the Society’s Administrative Board, and his 17 employee team. The Radio Broadcasting Institution was
conceived by its founders to support and promote the Romanian culture.

On February 11, 1932, when the studio located General Berthelot street was inaugurated, the Minister of Public Works
and Communications stated in his speech that the public radio service is to be “… a sort of University for everybody,
“where the usefulness and education should be skilfully melted.”

Currently, the main international bodies which our Radio is affiliated to as a member are: EBU (the European
Broadcasting Union), URTI (the International Radio and Television Union), IPI (the International Press Institute) and
COPEAM (the Permanent Conference of the Mediterranean Broadcasting Service).

Radio Romania is being on air via three national channels: Radio Romania News, Radio Romania Culture and the
Villages’ Antenna. At the same time, it broadcasts international programmes through the Radio Romanian
International 1 – RRI 1 (in Romanian) and Radio Romania International 2 – RRI 2 (in 10 foreign languages), while at
the regional level, it activates via 8 territorial studios and another one dedicated exclusively to the classical music:
Radio Romania Music.
Radio Romania’s offer goes further through Radio3Net, the first national channel with fully on-line transmission.

The sole Romanian channel with 99% national coverage. Its programmes are broadcast all round the
clock, every week day and have the widest network of correspondents in the country and abroad, as well as special
reporters in the areas of conflict. Radio Romania Actualitati (i.e. News and Current Affaires) offers its audience the
most complex news programmes, our “Radio Journal” being since long a notorious brand, radio programmes with
social, cultural, political and economical contents. Radio Romania Actualitati is recognized as an enthusiastic sports
promoter; at the same time, it is related to the promotion of high level Romanian and International musical repertoire,
the channel being known as a genuine rocket launcher of numerous major personalities of the Romanian music.
According to the latest poll Radio Romania Actualitati has a market quota of 13,0% at the national level and 14,7% in
Bucharest.

Radio Romania Cultural is the sole radio station in the country dedicated to cultural news and to
theatre and music masterpieces. Its programme includes cultural news, radio journals, live transmissions and reports
from the great Romanian and worldwide cultural events, festivals and galas, renowned theatre plays, major radio
dramatized biographies, programmes for children, with didactical purpose etc.

Radio Romania Music “George Enescu” is a channel “for experts”, dedicated to both classical music
and jazz. Created in 1997, Radio Romania Music has continuously been also a spreader of the Great Music and an
organizer of memorable musical events, concerts and festivals, e.g., the Chopin, Dinu Lipatti, “Bucharest – the Town
of Music”, George Enescu ones. On its website, RR Music launched 4 on demand streams – Opera Mia, Music for
children, Barocmania and Relax Music.

Through its 8 regional stations, the Romanian territorial radio broadcasts local news of major interest

A public channel with national coverage, created specifically for the rural space. Having a target-
audience made up predominantly of Romanians living in the rural area, “The Villages’ Antenna” Radio represents the
space of debates upon the Romanian village’s genuine problems. In October 2009, Radio Romania Villages’ Antenna
has launched the first online stream of folklore in Romania (http://www.antenasatelor.ro). Since transforming into a
national channel, The Villages’ Antenna Radio doubled its audience, being much appreciated in rural but also urban
environment.

RRI 1 and RRI 2 present the political, social, cultural and economical situation in our country, in its
wide complexity, as well as the Romanians’ history, the business opportunities, the main tourist destinations and the
Romanian personalities. This channel debates upon the evolution of this specific area, galvanizes the intercultural
dialogue, and contributes to the debate on major issues and the development of new ideas. RRI is an offensive player
in the international radio co-productions league.

The first radio channel in the country and in Europe that broadcasts exclusively on the Internet. Its site hosts
an impressive collection of folk and rock albums, radio dramatized tales and video recordings from musical
national festivals, such as the Folk Music Festival called “Folk you” or the “Prometheus”, and the “Delta
Fest” Festivals. On Radio3Net can be listened: “1,001 albums of everlasting songs”, “The Best 500 albums”,
“The Best 500 songs”, “The Greatest 100 Guitar Players of all times”, “The Best 100 Rock Artists Ever”. The creator of
Radio3Net is the much regretted artist Florian Pittiş.

Launched in 2011, Radio Romania Junior is the newest on-line channel of Radio Romania,
dedicated to children

On the 1st of December 2011, Radio Romania launched a new station, Radio Chisinau,
meant to broadcast high standards editorial programmes in the Republic of Moldova.

The most powerful press-monitoring centre in Romania was created in 1990. Its editorial staff monitors the information
issued in Romanian and further 15 foreign languages, out of the audio-visual realm: 57 channels of radio and
television, as well as from the written press – 150 newspapers and press agencies all around the continents. It
publishes news, interviews, analyses, commentaries grouped into flows of political, economical, scientific, as well as in
specialized bulletins: “Romania viewed from abroad”, “Romanians from everywhere”, “The International Press
Review”, “The Worldwide Economy”, “The Romanian Economy”, “The 27 ones for Europe”, “The Balkans and the
Black Sea”, “The Scientific Universe”.

Radio Romania has an active and direct involvement in supporting the Romanian book market, launching the original
concept of “market formation manifestation”. The International Fair “Gaudeamus – Educational Book” is at present the
most important event of exhibitional type in Romania dedicated to the book and the education (since 2001 it has been
enclosed in the Frankfurt book fairs calendar). According to both the professionals in the field and the journalists, the
Gaudeamus Fair can be assessed among the 10 European events of the kind in terms of breadth and the new created
market value. The Gaudeamus Fair School Book offers an adequate space to analyse, select and purchase the
educational materials necessary for every new school year. The Gaudeamus Caravan, inaugurated in Cluj-Napoca,
includes: Gaudeamus Craiova, Gaudeamus Cluj-Napoca, Gaudeamus Sibiu, Gaudeamus Timişoara and Gaudeamus
Mamaia.
● The Radio Publishing House
It systematically valorises the written and sound archives of the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation. The
mission of this entity lies in raising the genuine tradition in the field of radio journalism by turning to good account an
impressive archive written and sound patrimony, as well as in rendering again to the public – via its publications – the
documentary materials reflecting the current cultural and professional trends in the realm of audiovisual journalism.
The Radio Publishing House’s production gathers the collections: “The Radio Library” with its series “Magister”,
“Thesaurus”, Guidelines XXI” and “Manifest”, Radio Tom Thumb”, “The Bottom Drawer”, “The Romanian Poetry
Library”, supplemented by recordings from the “Golden Sound Library” and CD collections with radio drama
recordings.

The National Radio Drama


The first radio drama programme was broadcast on February 18, 1929, with a live transmission of an
one-act play “What the village knew” by V. Al. Jean in the interpretation of the actors of the “Maria
Filotti” National Theatre and of Ronald Bulfinski. The Channel has become the “acoustic stage” of the
whole country, enjoying a huge audience, unique in the Romanian cultural and artistic media
landscape.
In October 2009, Radio Romania launched the first Romanian online radio drama streaming – www.eteatru.ro – that
airs recordings from the “Golden Sound Library”.

The Radio Ensembles

The National Radio Orchestra, the first symphonic ensemble of the Romanian Radio
Broadcasting Corporation, was created in 1928. Along the time, it imposed itself among the most
valuable similar ensembles worldwide.

The Radio Academic Choir. Created in 1940, is made up of about 70 persons, all of them professionals with high
specialty studies. Its repertoire is remarkably wide, including a capella, lyrical and vocal –symphonic alike.

The Radio Children’s Choir, created in 1945, is one of the most ancient radio choirs all over the world. It’s activity
includes over 50 artistic tours, many a capella vocal/symphonic concerts, recordings and international awards. In
October 2004 the ensemble received the EU Cultural Ambassador title.

The Radio Chamber Orchestra, created in 1947 under the denomination of “Studio Orchestra”, became in 1990 a
Mozart-type ensemble, with 37 instrumentalists. Its repertoire includes different musical styles and genres, from
symphony to opera, from oratorium to concertante works, benefiting from the participation of many renowned artists
and conductors.

The Big Band Radio was created in 1949 in order to complete the presence of Radio in the Romanian spiritual life.
This ensemble deals with various musical styles, from light music to promenade and jazz.

The Radio Folk Orchestra, initially made up of 12 among the most valuable professionals of the genre, has now 23
instrumentalists – interpreters of genuine folklore and romance. Its repertoire consists in most regional genres and
styles, characteristic to the most diversified folkloric areas along the whole country.

The “Voces” Quartet was created in 1973, in Iaşi, being considered the most important Romanian ensemble of the
kind. It is mentioned in the international specialty dictionaries, being invited to festivals from major musical centers,
such as Bayreuth, Salzburg, Sienna and Toronto.
