Vocational scenario
Organization
You are responsible for operational management in a company (*). The chosen
company should be a multinational enterprise or the operations function of the
company is closely related to global sourcing of suppliers and supplies. After the
Covid-19 pandemic, the company is resilient slowly and needs to conduct the
operation improvement plan to get competitive advantage in the market.
Role
The Operations Management Department acts as a core fucntion which connects to
other functions in the company to manage daily activities operating efficiently and
effectively. As the Operations Manager, you has to lead your team by understanding
operations management processes clearly and applying the techniques and theories
of operations to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
Your key roles involve:
 Directing the overall strategy of operations: ensuring the operations
performance and strategic purpose to align to the business strategy by
general understanding of operations and processes and how strategic
purpose is translated to reality.
 Designing the operation’s resources and processes: determining the physical
form, shape and composition of operations and processes in line with the
services and products that they create.
 Planning and control process delivery: the delivery of services and products
from suppliers and through the total operation to customers must be
planned and controlled.
 Developing process performance: ensuring the operations continuous
improvement activities to get efficiency and effectiveness for the process
performance improvement.

(*)Based on type of the company, you can hold the position of the Operations
Manager, Logistics Manager, Supply Chain Specialist or Operation Analyst.
Assignment activity and guidance

You’re working as the Operations Manager in a company (the students will be


advised to choose different companies). Currently, the CEO has asked you for the
operations improvement plan which align to the business strategy. Specifically, he
wants to make an operational analysis report which provide evaluation of all
operations processes and recommendations for further improve the efficiency and
effectiveness of current operations.
Your main task is to provide understanding and assessment of the operations
management and processes in the report. The structure of report is as following:
Introduction: Background of the chosen company, main purpose and structure
of the writing
Main contents
(1) Define the key concepts: transformational model and dimensions of
operations process in terms of explanation of the relationship between
operations function with others. Give examples to illustrate your
explanation.
(2) Discuss the role and its contributions of operations mangement across the
value chain (e.g. capacity management, supply chain management)
Based on your above discussion, analyze the relationship between
operations strategy and organizational goals achievement (e.g corporate
strategy and business strategy)
(3) Explain the operations performance (e.g. quality, speed, dependability,
flexibility and cost) and evaluate the performance metric including financial,
customer, internal process and learning and growth (e.g. Balance scorecard
approach)
(4) Evaluate the impact of technology on operations management (e.g. cloud
computing, remote working, convergence of technology platform)
(5) Recommendations of solutions to support decision making in terms of
evaluation of external influences on contemporary operations management
(e.g. PESTEL, globalisation, sustainability)
(6) Critical evaluate the application of operations techniques in solving problems
and achieving business objectives. Give evidences for your evaluation.
