Alexander the Great was born in 356 BC in Macedonia. He became King when he was 20 and
continued the work that his father had begun. In 334 BC he invaded Persia and by his thirtieth
birthday he had conquered most of south-west Asia. However, while he was planning the invasion
of Arabia he developed a fever and died.
Last month Albert and I went on a skiing trip to Scotland. We had been saving up for months and
so we were very excited when the time came to leave. We packed our bags, got in the car and set
off . We had been driving for six hours when Albert suddenly remembered something - we had
forgotten to pack the skis!
George Grimes woke up feeling very odd. All through the night he had been dreaming about
strange creatures which were trying to break in through his window. They had horns and big green
eyes and they seemed to be threatening him. "Oh well," he thought, "at least they aren't real." Just
at that moment, however, a big scaly hand came crashing through the window!
When Bob invited me to go fishing with him I was excited because I had never been fishing
before. But as we were driving to the river we saw the first black clouds and ten minutes later it
was raining heavily. Three hours later, soaking wet, we were still looking for somewhere to get
warm and dry.
"Did you enjoy your holiday?" "No, it was a disaster! As I was getting on the plane, I found I had
left my holiday money at home! I had been saving for months to get that money. My father sent me
a cheque, but it took five days to reach me."
Alan had been working in the same office for ten years before he applied for another post with
Mask Ltd. He had been waiting for an answer for weeks when he was asked to attend an interview
with the Personnel Manager. He went there dressed in an expensive suit which he had bought the
day before, only to find that they wanted someone to work as a cleaner.

Dear Mrs Scott,

I am writing to confirm arrangements concerning Margarita. Margarita’s plane leaves Hamburg at

5.30 and arrives to London Gatwick at 6.45, so it will be early to start for you. As I agreed with
Margarita, her work starts at 8-10 in the morning up to 3-8 in the afternoon. She has English lessons
every Saturday. As I know by Christmas Margarita will complete six months’ employment here for
to expect her pay rise 100%. I am going for holiday for three weeks from Saturday if I will have no
problems with secretary Elizabeth Hazlett. I hope things will run smoothly with you and Margarita.

Yours sincerely,
Janet Hemworth
